An emergency landing nearly ended in tragedy last week when an airplane was forced down on a ski slope in the French ski resort Avoriaz, the French news outlet Agence France-Presse reports. During the forced landing, the airplane managed to avoid most of the people on the busy ski hill but hit a Polish skier before coming to a stop. The lady struck by the plane is lucky to be alive after her hand was hit by the plane's propeller.

Indonesia will on Sunday end a search for the bodies of 56 people missing from an AirAsia jet that crashed into the Java Sea in December, a national rescue agency official said.AirAsia flight QZ8501 lost contact with air traffic control during bad weather less than halfway into a two-hour flight from Surabaya in Indonesia to Singapore on December 28. All 162 people on board the Airbus A320 were killed."Some of our ships and personnel have been pulled back already and some remain on standby, but officially the operation will be finished on Sunday," Yusuf Latif, a spokesman for the search and rescue agency, told Reuters.

The flight data and cockpit voice recorders were recovered two weeks after the crash. Large pieces of the fuselage were also found on the sea floor. A multi-national rescue effort, led by the Indonesian military and often hampered by bad weather and strong currents, recovered 106 bodies, with 56 unaccounted for. Few details of the analysis of the flight recorders have been made public. The National Transportation Safety Committee has revealed that the French first officer was at the controls of the jet just before the accident.

The AirAsia crash was the latest in a string of accidents to hit Indonesia's aviation industry, which is among the fastest-growing in the region, and has stepped up pressure on the government and airlines to improve safety. The final result of the investigation is due in about six months, an investigator said.

A Germanwings Airbus A320 airliner has crashed in the French Alps between Digne and Barcelonnette, aviation officials and police have said. The plane, flight 4U 9525, had been en route from Barcelona to Duesseldorf with 144 passengers and six crew. No one is expected to have survived. The plane crashed after an eight-minute descent, an official said. It is not clear if it sent a distress signal. French and and German leaders have spoken of their shock. "This is the hour in which we all feel deep sorrow," German Chancellor Angela Merkel told reporters, adding that she was planning to travel to the crash site. A rescue helicopter has reportedly reached the site of the crash, in a remote mountain area. Gilbert Sauvan, a local council official, told Les Echos newspaper that the plane had "disintegrated". "The largest debris is the size of a car," he said.

This is one of the greatest tragedies in the history of German civil aviation.

Our thoughts and prayers are with those who lost their lives and with their relatives and friends.

One minute after reaching its cruising height of of 38.000 ft, the PIC reported the initiation of an emergency descent. 8 minutes later, with a average descent rate of 3.700 ft/min, at 10.53 local time, the aircraft disappeared from the radar. The crash site is reported in high mountainous terrain at app. 8000 ft MSL.

A whole class of students and their 2 teachers from the little town of Haltern in North-Rhein-Westfalia are among the casualties. They were on their way home from a student exchange program in Spain. 65 Germans plus 6 German crew, 45 people from Spain and 34 people from other nations were on board the Germanwings A 320 (a Lufthansa company).

I am quite familiar with that area. Barcelonnette is one of Europes well known center for mountain glider flying in southern France and is the destination of my glider flying vacation every year in april.

The crash side is one of the most remote areas in whole central Europe and marked on my glider flying map as a no OFF-Field glider landing area. Very step and rough terrain with no significant infrastructure like roads or villages. The site of the crash can only be reached by helicopters and is under high snow and very bad weather at the moment.

    Awful news

Official statement of the French, German and Spanish authorities and Lufthansa after complete readout of the cockpit voice recorder and the tapes of ATC:

After level off at FL 380, the PIC verbally transfered the control of the aicraft to his copilot and left the cockpit in order to visit the toilet. The cockpit door locked behind him. When the Captain tried to reenter the cockpit, the copilot did not open the cockpit door and defeted the entry by overriding the cockpit entry code with the override switch. Meanwhile he had deliberatly initiated the descent. The cockpit voice recorder indicates the massive etempts of the captain to open the cockpit door by force and continued to do so until impact. No reaction was shown by the copilot, although his normal and even breathing and the icoming radio calls from ATC could be recognized on the voice recorder. After touching the top of a hill, the aircraft impacted into the mountain at a speed of more than 360 Kts and an impact angle of nearly 90 degrees.

For the authorities, the official reason for the fatal crash is as follows:

"Aircraft flown deliberatly and controlled into ground by the copilot".

This is the greatest and most horrifying tragedy in the history of German civil aviation and in the history of Lufthansa.

There were believed to be 74 passengers and seven crew members on board Asiana Airlines flight OZ162 when it was reported to have made a tailstrike and skidded off the runway. Japanese media are reporting that the plane spun 180 degrees after impact to be left facing the wrong way on the runway. This occurred at Hiroshima International Airport in Japan.

Sad news but still good new out of the outcome...

A Mooney Type S aircraft crashed during the Sun 'n Fun event... while the aircraft was a total loss as it burst into flames when it crashed, the pilot somehow managed to walk away with only minor injuries. Sad to loose the plane but the best outcome is when no lives are loss. No one on the ground was injured or killed so still a good outcome.

Turkish Airbus A320 landing on its belly because of gear failure.

A THY Turkish Airlines Airbus A320-200, registration TC-JPE performing flight TK-1838 from Milan Malpensa (Italy) to Istanbul (Turkey) with 97 passengers, was on approach to Istanbul Ataturk Airport's runway 05 when the crew declared emergency due to an engine (V2527) inoperative and went around. The crew subsequently reported an unsafe gear indication. The aircraft positioned for an emergency landing on runway 35L, touched down safely, but the right main gear collapsed during roll out causing the aircraft to skid on its right engine and veer right off the runway spinning nearly 180 degrees. The aircraft was evacuated via slides while emergency services started to spray the aircraft. The airline confirmed the aircraft went off the runway during an emergency landing, the 97 passenges have been safely evacuated, there are no injuries. (Av Herald)

It appears an EgyptAir Boeing 737-800 has gone missing from radar. The flight operating was MS804 from Paris to Cairo and vanished from radar screens at 37,000 ft. The aircraft was said to have 59 passengers and 10 crew onboard. Just two months ago another jet from the same airline was hijacked and forced to stop in Cyprus.

Okay, so it is actually an Airbus A320 from Egypt Air rather than a Boeing 737-800 as was reported very early on.

A Korean Air Boeing 777-300 had to end its planned flight from Tokyo Haneda to Seoul Gimpo after fire was realized in one of the engines. “The plane was taxiing for take-off when flame was detected from engine No.1,” says Korean Air. “The take-off was immediately cancelled.” All 302 passengers and 18 crew onboard flight KE2708 were evacuated via the aircraft’s emergency inflatable slides.

A Boeing 737 was damaged by a fire in or near the hangar at the Prague Airport yesterday. Information is still sketchy but the aircraft is said to be a 737 operated by Congo-based airline ECAir. The fire took place at the hangar and was extinguished relatively quickly by the airport's fire personnel. If sources are correct, the aircraft is a Boeing 737-700 series registered OO-JJI.
