Gulfstream Signs Lease For New Office Building

Gulfstream Aerospace has entered a 12-year lease with North Point Real Estate for a 70,000-square-foot office building in the Crossroads Business Park. The building will house Gulfstream’s Information Technology Center of Excellence, supporting the company’s worldwide business operations. It will house more than 400 professionals, 100 of whom will be new employees hired over the next several years.

Gulfstream has continued to grow its Savannah facilities since the November 2010 announcement of a seven-year, $500-million Savannah expansion. As part of that expansion, Gulfstream committed to hire an additional 1,000 employees over a seven-year period.

“Within the first two years of that seven-year period, Gulfstream has hired more than 1,695 new full-time employees in Savannah alone, nearly 700 more than what we originally estimated,” said Larry Flynn, president, Gulfstream. “We’ve also invested more than $175 million toward our $500 million commitment. This brings our total employment in Georgia to 8,580 and demonstrates that Gulfstream is a powerful economic engine for both local and state economies.”

Financial details of the North Point transaction were not disclosed. The Savannah Economic Development Authority (SEDA) played a critical role in securing this site, including site selection, acquisition of additional land and lease support consistent with previous agreements between SEDA and Gulfstream.

Gulfstream Names Danny Wilson Director of Supplier Performance and Development 

Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. recently named Danny Wilson director, Supplier Performance and Development. Wilson is responsible for enhancing supplier delivery and quality. He reports to Bill Williams, vice president, Supply Chain. Previously, Wilson was a senior manager of Supply Chain Surveillance at Gulfstream. He oversaw critical supply chain elements, including evaluating suppliers and implementing processes that enhance product delivery.

“Danny is a strong leader and decision maker with an extensive understanding of business operations and supply chain management,” said Williams. “He is an invaluable resource for Gulfstream, and in this new role he will ensure that suppliers provide the best product for our customers.”

Since coming to Gulfstream in 1996, Wilson has worked as a senior buyer, a subcontract administrator, a purchasing and materials project manager and a procurement supervisor. Wilson has a Master of Business Administration degree from Mercer University in Macon, Ga., and a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in management from North Georgia College in Dahlonega, Ga.

Good news for Gulfstream

Gulfstream had commendable figures in 2012 posting better than average revenue and earnings figures. They expect to continue on strong with 139-deliveries for 2013, 80% of those expected to be the larger cabin aircraft in their offering. Demand for the company's large cabin line-up, that is, the G450, G550 and G650 - remains very solid and the these models are anticipated to account for 113 of the delivery total this year. The midsize family, G150 and G280, will make up the remaining 26 deliveries.

Gulfstream Lincon Named Authorized Service Station By Howell Instruments

The Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. facility in Lincoln, Calif., was named the first U.S.-based authorized service station for Howell Instruments Inc. Howell, located in Fort Worth, Texas, engineers, manufactures and repairs instrumentation, engine monitoring systems and ground support equipment for civilian and military aircraft. Gulfstream Lincoln’s capabilities for the Howell product line include testing and repair of interstage turbine temperature indicators, AUTOTEMP® indicators, AUTOTAK® indicators, engine pressure ratio indicators, fuel flow indicators, fan speed indicators, fan speed amplifiers and tachometers. Many of these Howell components can be found on earlier Gulfstream models, such as the GIV, GIII and GII.

“This authorization is an indication of Howell’s confidence in the staff and resources we have at Gulfstream Lincoln, our service center dedicated solely to component repair and overhaul,” said Mark Burns, president, Gulfstream Product Support. “There are approximately 900 GIVs, GIIIs and GIIs flying worldwide, and most of them have instrumentation made by Howell. Howell products are also on aircraft built by other manufacturers. Our ability to repair Howell products helps keep these aircraft safe and reliable.” Said Shep Brown, chief executive officer, Howell: “A strategic alliance with Gulfstream presents an exciting opportunity to combine our engine instrumentation expertise with an industry leader in aircraft manufacturing. The Gulfstream Lincoln facility is certified by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and the European Aviation Safety Agency. The site’s other capabilities include testing, inspection, repair and overhaul for electromechanical, electric and electronic components; avionics; rotables, brakes, wheels and tires along with spare part exchanges and repairs; and government part sales. The 34,000-square-foot Lincoln facility is located approximately 30 miles northeast of Sacramento, Calif.

Gulfstream Appoints Dan Nale To Senior Vice President For Programs, Engineering And Test

Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. has appointed Dan Nale to the position of senior vice president, Programs, Engineering and Test, effective April 1. He will succeed Pres Henne, who will retire March 31. Nale will oversee the company's Engineering, Flight Operations and Program Management Organizations as well as aircraft development, reporting to Larry Flynn, president, Gulfstream.

Most recently, Nale served as vice president, Advanced Aircraft Programs, where he was responsible for overseeing the development of next-generation Gulfstream aircraft. Previously, as vice president, Engineering, Nale was responsible for several design- and engineering-related organizations, including Structures, GV Propulsion, Auxiliary Power Unit, Fuel Systems, Environmental Control and Pressurization Systems. As vice president, Mid-Cabin Programs, a position he took over in March 2003, he was responsible for managing the Gulfstream G100, G150, G200 and G280 programs. Before joining Gulfstream, he worked as a stress engineer on the space shuttle wing program for Grumman Aerospace Corp.

“Dan started his Gulfstream career in 1985 as a structural analysis engineer and has held increasingly responsible engineering positions within the company over the past 28 years,” said Flynn. “I have complete confidence in Dan’s ability to lead the vast team of 1,675 engineers, scientists and designers who are responsible for the industry-leading research and development undertaken at Gulfstream.”

Nale, a Georgia-registered professional engineer (P.E.), holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from The Citadel in Charleston, master’s and doctoral degrees in engineering from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, and a Master of Business Administration degree from Mercer University in Macon, Ga. He also holds a single engine private pilot license. Henne, who turned 65 in 2012, joined Gulfstream in 1994. He is credited with leading the teams responsible for the design, development, test and certification of the Gulfstream V and G550 aircraft, which earned Robert J. Collier trophies from the National Aeronautics Association in 1997 and 2003, respectively. The trophy is awarded annually for the greatest achievement in aeronautics or astronautics in North America.

Most recently, Henne oversaw the development of the company’s much-anticipated G650, one of the world’s most sophisticated business-jet aircraft. The G650, which entered service in 2012, was designed with technological advances such as a digital fly-by-wire system, triplex flight management systems, auto emergency descent and enhanced and synthetic vision systems. Henne also supervised the design and development of the G280, an aircraft that has been noted for its best-in-class performance, cabin comfort and technology.

“Over the past 15 years or so, Gulfstream Aerospace has introduced six new products; launched a number of industry-leading product enhancements, including the Gulfstream Enhanced Vision System and Synthetic Vision – Primary Flight Display; and received the Robert J. Collier trophy twice. We also established a strong engineering organization as well as a Research and Development Center campus with four office buildings and a dedicated state-of-the-art lab building," Flynn said. “These accomplishments are due, in part, to Pres’ leadership, innovation and knowledge of the aerospace industry. His retirement is well-deserved.”Said Henne, “It’s amazing how 44 years in the aircraft design and development business have flown by. It has been an honor to be part of the teams that developed the G650, G550, GV, G450, G280 and G150.”

Henne earned a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical and astronautical engineering with highest undergraduate honors from the University of Illinois in 1969 and a master’s degree in engineering from California State University at Long Beach in 1974. Henne is a Fellow of the American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. His awards include the AIAA 1996 Engineer of the Year Award, the AIAA 2001 Hap Arnold Award for Excellence in Aeronautical Program Management, the 2005 University of Illinois Alumni Award for Distinguished Service, a 2012 Living Legend of Aviation Award from the Kiddie Hawk Air Academy, the AIAA 2012 Reed Aeronautics Award and a 2012 Aviation Week Laureate Award.

Gulfstream Appleton Revieves Approval From Aviation Authorities In Cayman Islands and South Korea

The Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. service center in Appleton, Wis., recently earned approved maintenance organization (AMO) designations from the Cayman Islands and South Korea. With these authorizations, various model aircraft registered under the Civil Aviation Authority of the Cayman Islands and the Korean Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs can undergo maintenance, repairs, alterations and inspections at Gulfstream's Appleton facility. Gulfstream Appleton is the fourth company-owned service center to earn AMO approval from the Cayman Islands, joining Gulfstream Savannah, Gulfstream Long Beach in California and Gulfstream Westfield in Massachusetts. Gulfstream Appleton and Gulfstream Long Beach have AMO approval from South Korea. The aircraft covered by Gulfstream Appleton's Cayman Islands certificate includes all Gulfstream aircraft, the Bombardier Challenger 600 series and the Hawker Beechcraft 800 series, 850XP and 700 models. The South Korean authorization is for work on G550s.

"The Cayman Islands registry continues to grow, as does South Korea's, so these are important authorizations for Appleton," said Mark Burns, president, Gulfstream Product Support. "Earning these approvals gives Gulfstream and other aircraft operators another option for quality service and support." Gulfstream Appleton is a U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and European Aviation Safety Agency Part 145 repair station, which means the site's 700-plus employees can also work on aircraft registered in the U.S. and European Union countries. In 2012, Appleton's workforce serviced 360 aircraft. Gulfstream Appleton also has maintenance approvals from the civil aviation authorities in Bermuda, Canada, China, Nigeria and Saudi Arabia.

Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. recently introduced a mobile version of Nonstop magazine. The Nonstop app is available now as a free download from the Apple App Store.

Introduced in 2011, Nonstop magazine targets Gulfstream aircraft owners, business travelers and aviation professionals, and includes features on the business of aviation, business and leisure travel, and lifestyle topics for a wide audience.

“The Nonstop app brings the print edition to life with a fantastic interactive experience,” said Scott Neal, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing, Gulfstream. “Readers will be able to learn more about the featured stories with expanded video, photography and other interactive content, such as virtual tours. The app, much like the print magazine, is designed to appeal to a discerning audience in search of excellence.”

Ahead of the 2013 ABACE Show Gulfstream names James Liang as Product Support Sales Manager For Asia

Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. has appointed longtime company employee James Liang as a regional sales manager for Product Support Sales in Asia. He is based at the Gulfstream Product Support Asia office in Hong Kong and reports to Jeff Hill, director, International Product Support Sales. Liang is responsible for maintenance and avionics sales in the Asia-Pacific region, which has grown from 27 Gulfstream operators in 2001 to more than 200 today. For the past three years, Liang was Gulfstream’s Hong Kong-based manager for parts and materials in Asia. In that position, he managed more than $56 million in inventory at warehouses in Hong Kong, Beijing and Singapore. He also was responsible for overseeing parts distribution in the region. Materials lead Ka Ming Lau will assume Liang’s responsibilities.

Before relocating to Hong Kong, Liang held multiple positions at Gulfstream’s service center in Long Beach, Calif., including senior avionics technician from March 2008 to January 2010. Liang earned a bachelor’s degree in international business from California State University at Fullerton. He is fluent in English and Mandarin.

Lau holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of California at Davis and a master’s degree in automotive engineering design from Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He is fluent in English, Mandarin and Cantonese. Before joining Gulfstream in February 2013, Lau was a logistics specialist for Gulfstream authorized warranty facility and parts consignment partner Metrojet Ltd. in Hong Kong, where he oversaw and managed the movement of Gulfstream parts and materials in Hong Kong and Beijing.

General Dynamics' aerospace division recorded a hike in its first-quarter revenues to $1.78 billion. The figures mark a $155 million hike on the previous year, based on a strong performance by Gulfstream. In the first three months of the year, the airframer delivered 30 'green' jets -25 large-cabin G450s, G550s and G650s and five midsize G150/G280s-, compared with 26 large-cabin and two midsize business jets a year ago. So basically a bit of an improvement on the same period last year.

GULFSTREAM INCREASES PRESENCE IN NORTHEAST U.S. WITH OPENING OF ADDITIONAL WESTFIELD, MASS., HANGAR

Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. today announced it has opened an additional hangar at its service center at Barnes Regional Airport in Westfield, Mass. The facility serves the Northeast region of the United States, the busiest corridor for Gulfstream business jets in the world. Gulfstream Westfield’s new 125,000-square-foot hangar complements the adjacent 85,000-square-foot facilities. It accommodates the new ultra-large-cabin Gulfstream G650 and all other Gulfstream aircraft, and nearly doubles the site’s under-roof capacity from a mixture of 12 large-cabin and mid-cabin aircraft to approximately 22. The expansion, which was announced in October 2011, has resulted in more than 60 new product support-related jobs at the site. Approximately 40 more positions are expected to be added this year.

“This is a wonderful day for Westfield, Western Massachusetts and Gulfstream,” said Mark Burns, president, Gulfstream Product Support. “We are very excited about this expansion, which comes on the heels of the entry-into-service of our two new aircraft, the G650 and G280. We built this hangar and added employees to the team to help ensure that those aircraft and the rest of our growing fleet are well supported. We’re grateful to the city of Westfield and the commonwealth of Massachusetts, including the Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development and the Department of Transportation, for their critical support. “Gulfstream Westfield continually gets high marks from customers, and these added resources will only enhance that world-class service and support.”

Gulfstream announced the hangar opening in front of an audience made up of the site’s 200 employees along with local and state dignitaries, including Richard A. Davey, secretary and chief executive officer of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, and U.S. Congressman Richard Neal. Gulfstream Westfield, located approximately 97 miles from Boston and 130 miles from the New York metro area, offers a full range of services, including aircraft-on-ground (AOG) support, airframe inspections, avionics installations and interior refurbishments. On-site technicians are certified to work on large- and mid-cabin Gulfstream aircraft along with Hawker, Dassault Falcon and Bombardier Challenger business jets. Approximately 500 of these aircraft, including more than 200 Gulfstream jets, are based within 150 miles of the facility.

Westfield’s new hangar includes two overhead cranes and a tail dock. It was built with several sustainable and green design features, including building materials with recycled content, water-efficient lavatories and showers, and energy-efficient lighting. Gulfstream Westfield is certified by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, European Aviation Safety Agency and also has maintenance approvals from the civil aviation authorities in Aruba, Bermuda and the Cayman Islands. In 2012, Westfield employees serviced 811 aircraft, which included off-site maintenance support for aircraft located as far away as Newfoundland, Canada.

GULFSTREAM RELEASES UPDATE TO PLANEBOOK IPAD APP

Pilots And Flight Crew Use Program To Operate Gulfstream Aircraft
More Safely And Effectively

SAVANNAH, Ga., May 15, 2013 — Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. recently released an update to the company’s PlaneBook™ iPad application, an electronic document management system that has helped pilots and flight crews operate Gulfstream aircraft more safely and effectively since 2011. “Our customers enjoy the convenience of using our operating manuals on the iPad and receiving automatic updates,” said Bill Colleran, director, Technical Publications, Gulfstream. “This update incorporates a number of improvements that came from their feedback, including landscape and portrait orientations, AirPrint compatibility and search features. We think our customers will be pleased with the result.”

Other new features include a document selector, history window, bookmark navigator, manual reorder feature, highly visible battery percentage indicator, better aircraft subscription organization and an improved help file. The PlaneBook app provides pilots easy and immediate access to critical flight information and aircraft-specific documents, such as the Airplane Flight Manual, Operating Manual, Pilot’s Checklist and the Quick Reference Handbook (QRH). The electronic version of the QRH, which includes emergency flight procedures, serves as the master document that links to all other documents for easy cross-referencing.

PlaneBook also allows pilots to create and add their own content and tailor the app to their particular flying habits or preferences. In addition, since documents and manuals are downloaded straight to the iPad, users will have offline access to all of their important information. A “History” feature gives pilots even quicker access to the documents they frequently use, and instructional videos for each of Gulfstream’s aircraft, as well as latest news from the company, are available through the app. The Gulfstream PlaneBook app is now available from the App Store on iPad or at www.planebookapp.com. Current users will notice an update notification in the “App Store” app on their iPad devices, and are encouraged to download the new version immediately. Gulfstream support network grows in europe

gulfstream aerospace corp. Continues to add resources to its product support network worldwide, including in europe, home to more than 180 gulfstream operators. Since moving into a new, larger hangar at london luton airport in september 2011, the gulfstream luton service center has grown to approximately 190 employees and continues to support gulfstream operators on-site, across the united kingdom and europe, and as far as asia. Gulfstream has also increased its spare parts and materials inventory in the region to $125 million. The inventory covers all models of gulfstream aircraft, including the new ultra-long-range, ultra-large-cabin g650 and the super mid-size g280. The initial deliveries for both aircraft include european customers.

Another key element of gulfstream’s customer service in europe is the mobile repair team unit, which is part of its field and airborne support teams (fast). In may 2013, gulfstream added a sixth member to this select group of maintenance engineers. “we’re committed to our operators in europe, whether they’re based there or traveling through the continent on the way to the middle east, africa or asia,” said mark burns, president, gulfstream product support. “we continue to invest in enhancing our depth and breadth of services in europe and continually seek new ways to better support customers.”

gulfstream luton, located 30 miles north of london, is a certified federal aviation administration (faa), european aviation safety agency (easa) part 145 repair station and easa part 21 design organization, which includes avionics and interiors installation and repair capability. The facility also holds 11 other foreign authority approvals. Gulfstream luton technicians service more than 100 aircraft monthly at their facility off-site. In the past year, luton personnel have assisted customers in aircraft-on-ground situations as far away as india and nigeria. Gulfstream luton also offers easa-authorized continued airworthiness management organization (camo) services. The camo department currently manages 15 aircraft and has capacity to handle additional aircraft.

Luton’s 75,000-square-foot hangar can accommodate 10 to 12 aircraft depending on the mix of large-cabin and mid-cabin models. It sits adjacent to a 10,000-square-foot parts warehouse, which opened in may 2011. Most of gulfstream’s europe-based parts and materials – nearly $80 million – are located in madrid at corjet maintenance’s warehouse at barajas airport. Gulfstream’s luton and madrid facilities can ship parts anywhere in europe or the middle east within 24 hours and offer a 24-hour call-in number for customers who need parts support. Gulfstream also has approximately $17 million in parts positioned at jet aviation in basel.

Gulfstream’s fast maintenance engineers are based in switzerland, paris and athens. A new fast maintenance engineer will be based in kiev. The engineers, who can be dispatched by airplane, train, automobile or van, are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to respond to maintenance issues in the field. Each engineer is type-rated on multiple gulfstream aircraft models. All are easa-licensed mechanical and/or electrical engineers and have earned an faa airframe and powerplant license. Gulfstream’s long list of customer resources in europe also includes two field service representatives in england and one in russia, spain and switzerland, respectively. Gulfstream also has company-authorized service centers at jet aviation’s sites in basel, geneva and moscow, and three company-authorized warranty facilities, altenrhein aviation in altenrhein, switzerland, and kiev, and corjet maintenance in madrid.

Two international aviation groups recognised Gulfstream today at the EBACE for setting 30 records with three new aircraft models during 2012. "We are proud to have been able to work with Gulfstream on these records and congratulate them on every one of them," saysJonathan Gaffney, president and chief executive of the National Aeronautic Association. The records were also hailed by Jean-Marc Badan, secretary general of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale. The G650 and G280 were at the helm of these records.
