One of the big pieces of news coming out of the show so far is on the commercial side of things. Gulf carrier Emirates has placed an order for 50 Airbus A350-900s. This order tips the balance of power to Airbus in the race between the French airframer and American rival Boeing to field orders from Emirates. The deal is worth some 30 billion dollars and came on the second day of the show. "Today, we are pleased to sign a firm order for 50 A350 XWBs," Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Emirates CEO said. He continued, The new airplanes "will give us added operational flexibility in terms of capacity, range and deployment. In effect, we are strengthening our business model to provide efficient and comfortable air transport services to, and through, our Dubai hub".

The Embraer KC-390 has been renamed as revealed at the 2019 Dubai Air Show. It will now be known as C-390 Millennium. It is basically to make it more recognizable as a cargo transport. It is unclear what the differences between the KC-390 and the C-390 Millennium are or if it is purely PR marketing.

Boeing did have a little news to shout about at the Dubai Air Show with one or two airlines still showing confidence in the grounded 737 MAX. Remember the 737 MAX has been grounded since March of this year and there is no real timeline when it will return to service. Turkish carrier SunExpress ordered 10 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. The deal said to be worth $1.2 billion might have been discounted handsomely but it represented "the first firm order" for the aircraft since its grounding. AP Photo
