SpaceShip Two has completed its second test flight after being dropped from the mother ship at around 51,000 feet. "Forger and Sooch performed a series of maneuvers with Unity designed to gather data about performance and handling qualities while flying at higher speeds," according to a company press release. "This data will be verified against similar maneuvers that were performed in the previous glide flight to enhance aerodynamic modeling. Pending the completion of an extensive data review of this flight, the team will start preparing for the next stage of our flight test program—powered spaceflights from Spaceport America. In addition to the data review, we have several steps to complete, including final modifications to the spaceship customer cabin and detailed inspections of the vehicle and systems."

Airbus has successfully completed the first key phase of the Skynet 6A project with the achievement of the Preliminary Design Review (PDR). The project now has permission to move into the next phase leading to the Critical Design Review (CDR). Airbus was awarded the Skynet 6A contract in July 2020 and teams across its sites in Stevenage, Portsmouth and Hawthorn have been working on the programme to achieve this key milestone. Meetings with the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) were held virtually enabling the review board to take place in October and the PDR being achieved in November.

Richard Franklin, Managing Director of Airbus Defence and Space UK said: "This is excellent news and demonstrates our joint commitment to work in partnership to achieve the programme schedule. The progress we are making in building the UK MOD’s next generation military satellite and getting to this stage, despite current restrictions, really highlights the flexible and strong working relationship we have built with the Defence Digital team. Skynet 6A, to be built entirely in the UK, will significantly enhance the UK’s milsatcoms capability, building on the heritage of the four Skynet 5 satellites which were also built by Airbus, and which are all still operating perfectly in orbit."

he European Space Agency (ESA) has signed a further contract with Airbus for the construction of three more European Service Modules (ESM) for Orion, the American crewed spacecraft for the Artemis programme. With these additional Service Modules, ESA ensures continuity in NASA’s Artemis programme beyond the three modules which are already under contract with Airbus. The European Service Module will be used to fly astronauts to the Moon. As the powerhouse of the new Orion spacecraft for NASA’s Artemis missions, it will provide critical functions such as the propulsion system to get the astronauts to the Moon, and the consumables the astronauts need to stay alive. "Europe has entered a new decade of exploration. Building six Orion European Service Modules is a venture like no other. Airbus has some of the world’s best minds in space exploration working on this phenomenal vehicle and this new agreement will facilitate many future Moon missions through international partnerships," said Andreas Hammer, Head of Space Exploration at Airbus. "Europe is a strong and reliable partner in NASA’s Artemis missions and the Orion European Service Module represents a crucial contribution to this."

The space race between private tech giants and interests is heating up. SpaceX has been constantly in the headlines with successful and failed attempts but with Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos stepping down as CEO, he can now focus his energies on the further development of his own space ambitions in the form of Blue Origin. Blue Origin has fallen behind in the race to secure billions of dollars in contracts from U.S National Security contracts as ULA (United Launch Alliance)- a company comprised of Lockheed Martin and Boeing- as well as SpaceX -Elon Musk's company-. It should also be noted that Elon Musk recently overtook Jeff Bezos as the richest man in the world. Bezos is stepping down from Amazon as the CEO so he could focus on more personal projects. He did not name any of those person projects but Blue Origin definitely would be one of those.

Blue Origin is in the news again. With renewed efforts to get Blue Origin to the forefront of private space exploration Jeff Bezos has attained another tick to the box of his company's rocket launch and recovery techniques. The New Shepard rocket booster and capsule recently returned from another launch and recover cycle making it the 15th such successful attempt. This rocket is what will carry people in a capsule attached to the top of the rocket. It should carry up to six individuals. The mission on Wednesday climbed to over 300,000 feet in altitude. On future missions with 'space tourist' the rocket is expected to stay in zero-G conditions for up to 10 minutes before returning to earth.
