Hartzell Propeller Inc announced that the introduction of its five-blade prop designed for Daher-Socata's TBM series of single-engine turboprops has been very successful, with an average of five customers trading out their propellers each week — a number that exceeds Hartzell's expectations.

I like it but carbon fibre worries me when I watch the first corner at the next Formula-1 race. It doesn't cope well with energy impacts. I see it has a metal leading edge strip but I still suspect it will do fairly badly at TO-power and 125 knots against one of these:

    http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kwKWxyu6K...BY/-GwmDfuZQZc/s1600/Cape+Barron+Goose+02.jpg

These birds are commonplace at many runways for 6 months of the year around this part of the world. I suspect an aluminium prop will be far less frangible. The TBM900 POH says the new prop adds 2 to 3 knots to the max cruise speeds in most conditions when compared to the tables for the standard prop. So it adds about 1% to overall speed and range performance. In other words, its main contribution seems to be style-over-substance, rather than a significant improvement for early-adopters. Yes, they look great, but in all honesty, you gain not much but may lose a lot of margin in terms of the less quantifiable measure of safety if you happened to lunch a Cape Barron Goose with one of these fiber props.

And these birds are a serious hazard and not the only one.

"... Bat strikes are also the most common type of wildlife strike, with the ATSB recording 767 incidents between 2002 and 2011. Plovers follow closely with 760, and galahs complete the top three with 729.

Galahs were most commonly involved in strikes of multiple birds, due to their flocking tendencies and their slow, erratic flight behaviour. They were voted the 'most dangerous bird' by Australian aerodromes. However, the potential for a strike to cause aircraft damage increases with the size of the animal-the bigger it is, the more likelihood of damage. Galahs are relatively small (330g) compared to what else is out there.

The Australian bustard (6,900g), brolga (6,700g), black swan (6,270g), Australian pelican (5,500g) and the Cape Barren goose (5,000g) are the heaviest birds in the sky and all have high hazard rankings. Ironically, so does the flightless emu. One of our national icons represents a major risk due to its size (37,500g) and has caused plenty of close calls, particularly in rural destinations. In 2005, an emu strike incident was recorded in Western Australia. ..."

I'd stick with the standard aluminium prop.

PS, by "bats" they mostly refer to flying-foxes ... and those are very large fruit bats.

DAHER-SOCATA today announced that Denmark’s Air Service Vamdrup ApS (ASV) has become the latest member of the TBM Customer Support Network as an approved TBM Service Center.

ASV is an EASA Part 145 certified operation based at Kolding Vamdrup Airport (EKVD) in southern Denmark, and it recently opened a second facility at Eggenmoen Airport (ENEG) in Norway. With these resources, ASV is now able to serve TBM operators from northern Europe to Russia.

“Air Service Vamdrup becomes an important element of our network, serving customers in a region where we expect strong market development for the TBM very fast turboprop aircraft family – especially its newest member, the TBM 900,” said Nicolas Chabbert, Senior Vice President of DAHER-SOCATA’s Airplane Business Unit. “I am confident is the first step for a growing business and collaboration between our two companies.”

Press Release verbatim on the TBM900 attending the Paris Airshow

"We are proud to present our TBM 900, the world’s fastest certified single-turboprop, for the first time at the Paris Air Show – one of the industry’s largest and most prestigious aviation gatherings,” commented Didier Kayat, Daher’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer. “This airplane perfectly highlights our skills as an aircraft manufacturer, which is a core expertise for Daher.” Nicolas Chabbert, the Senior Vice President of Daher’s Airplane Business Unit, noted the TBM 900 has become the fastest-selling family member during the TBM program’s 25-year history. "With 100 new orders logged in a year, the TBM 900’s sales success demonstrates its maturity and underlines our ability to meet the expectations of customers,” Chabbert added. “The Paris Air Show will enable us to raise the interest in new markets for this aircraft, while putting the focus on Daher’s service offerings – especially in the field of avionics upgrade."

Keystone Aviation, a TAC Air Company, has enlarged the sales coverage for Daher’s TBM very fast turboprop aircraft, adding four Canadian provinces and one additional U.S. state to its area of responsibility. The new geographic zone comprises the provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia in Canada, along with the most northwestern U.S. state – Alaska. This territory is in addition to the company’s previous coverage across the U.S. states of Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Wyoming and Montana. “We’ve had a fruitful 10-year partnership with Keystone Aviation in promoting and supporting our very fast turboprop aircraft throughout the Northwestern United States,” explained Nicolas Chabbert, Senior Vice President of the Daher Airplane Business Unit. “The next step is to build on this relationship by expanding into Western Canada and Alaska.”

Kristin Sandager of Albert Lea, Minnesota, and Dalton Nonweiler of Tulsa, Oklahoma, will receive the work internships of a lifetime, as they are the recipients of this year’s EAA/DAHER International Scholarships. The internship program is now in its tenth year. Each recipient receives a five-week internship at DAHER’s Tarbes facility in France, located in the shadow of the Pyrenees Mountains, followed by a week to the EAA Air Academy in Oshkosh where they’ll help DAHER during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2016. All travel, lodging, and work experience is included, as well as a side trip to the Airbus facility at Toulouse. For an aspiring student working toward a career in the aviation industry, it’s a dream situation.

“This opportunity gives a one-of-a-kind experience for the internship recipients,” said Nicolas Chabbert, DAHER Senior Vice President and CEO of SOCATA North America. “They will spend time with our team in France, gaining expertise in their fields of interest –such as marketing, production, organization, design, support and service. We hope the experience will make a difference in their future careers, while also benefiting our company by working with the next-generation of aviation industry decision-makers.” While DAHER is currently providing American students a chance to study abroad, the company has encouraged EAA to find companies in the U.S. willing to share such an experience with young people from other parts of the world. For instance, the two interns will have the opportunity to interact with DAHER employees as part of a unique cultural exchange.

“DAHER’s commitment provides an incentive, a challenge to EAA Young Eagles, an opportunity for them to explore a variety of career directions within the aviation field first hand, to see what the future holds,” said Dave Chaimson, EAA’s vice president of marketing and business development. “For a student, nothing is more important. The cultural exchange, the educational opportunities, and the impact on their lives are tremendous.” Sandager is a junior at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona, majoring in mechanical engineering with a focus on robotics. She would like to use her engineering degree in, as she puts it, “problem solving.” Sandager frequently attends EAA AirVenture Oshkosh and has volunteered in the vintage aircraft area.

Daher has delivered a TBM 930 to the corporate flight department of an Italian-based industrial group this month, the fourth TBM family aircraft this customer has acquired. The operator’s first purchase of a TBM family aircraft was a TBM 700A 17 years ago, followed by a TBM 700B variant in 2003 and a TBM 850 in 2006, leading up to the all-new TBM 930 version. The TBM 930 is the latest member in Daher’s very fast turboprop family, and was unveiled earlier this year. According to the manager of the company, the series of TBM aircraft have been perfectly matched to its transport requirements, performing shuttle flights between factory sites in Italy, France and Austria that produce flexible manufacturing systems, as well as for visits to European customers.

Daher recently announced the release of a new iPad application that allows future TBM 900 and TBM 930 owners to customize the paint scheme of their very fast turboprop aircraft, while also enabling TBM fans to visualize the airplane of their dreams. This free-of-charge application displays a full 3D view of the TBM that enables the aircraft to be seen from all angles. For each area defined by one of Daher’s two factory standard paint schemes, the user will be able to select a preferred color – assisted by a palette containing 105 different shades. A choice of aircraft registration styles also is offered, as well as the positioning of TBM 900/TBM 930 logos. After finalizing the configuration, the results are saved and made available as a PDF file or JPG image. "Style definitely matters for TBM owners, and the personalization phase is very important during a new aircraft acquisition,” commented Nicolas Chabbert, Senior Vice President of the Daher Airplane Business Unit. “By creating this configurator tool, we are providing a very realistic opportunity to visualize how the future airplane will look, enabling customers to define the external styling as early as possible.”

From takeoff in southwestern France to touchdown in the U.S. state of Florida, the experience of ferrying Daher’s TBM very fast turboprop aircraft over the North Atlantic Ocean for customer deliveries is highlighted in a new video available on YouTube. With the Americas accounting for nearly 80 percent of all TBMs ordered, ferry flights of new production aircraft across the North Atlantic is a regular part of the delivery process, which routinely is completed with an arrival at Daher’s operation in Pompano Beach, Florida. The new video captures the unique character of such ferry flights, including impressive landings at airports such as Reykjavik, Iceland; Narsarsuaq, Greenland, with its approach along a fjord; and Goose Bay in northern Canada, which is one the coldest places on Earth.
