Bombardier Specialized Aircraft announced recently that Conair Group Inc., the world’s leading provider of fixed wing aerial firefighting aircraft, has purchased six Q400 aircraft. Based on the current list price, the firm order is valued at approximately $206 million US. Conair operates the world’s largest fleet of privately owned fixed wing airtankers and supplies specialty aerial firefighting aircraft and products worldwide. These six Q400 production aircraft will be modified to incorporate an enhanced version of Conair’s proprietary Retardant Delivery System. In the Q400 Multirole configuration, the retardant tank can be removed and reinstalled in the field in a few hours. This enables the aircraft to efficiently perform additional roles in emergency response, passenger and cargo transport, medivac, and coastal patrol without compromising its exceptional firefighting capabilities.

Bombardier will be present at the forthcoming Singapore Airshow that starts on February 6th. They will have a two-class Bombardier Q400 (86-seats) along with a CS300 CSeries jet in Air Baltic livery. Bombardier recently delivered Korean Air's first CSeries aircraft so the CSeries is already present in the Asia region but they will be looking to drum-up further interest and support in the new jet.

“The high-performing Q400 aircraft has proven to serve the Asia-Pacific region very well. Bombardier acted well ahead of the market trend toward larger turboprops when it introduced the 90-seat Q400 turboprop at the Singapore Airshow two years ago. The Q400 aircraft ushered in a new era of turboprops, and the recent SpiceJet reorder for up to 50 new 90-seat Q400 turboprops is another great example of our strong market penetration.”

Bombardier releases statement on the US-Bangla Q400 crash

Everyone at Bombardier is saddened by the tragic event involving the Q400 aircraft. We extend our sympathies to the families of those whose lives were lost in this accident, and our thoughts are with those who survived. Bombardier Air Safety Investigation Office is in contact with the authorities, and will provide assistance to all authorities as needed. The Q400 aircraft has been designed to be robust and reliable in consideration of the high cycle demand of regional airlines and was designed to comply or exceed all airworthiness certification requirements. The Q400 fleet has accumulated over 8.5 million flight hours, and has performed about 10 million takeoffs and landings to date. The Bombardier Q400 turboprop has been in service since 2000. Currently, there are over 500 Q400 aircraft in service worldwide, and the fleet dispatch reliability over the past year was consistently over 99.5%.

Bombardier is looking to get rid of its production facility in Downsview which will likely mean that they have to find a new home for the Q400 and Global line. That facility is on an enormous plot of land that Bombardier is under utilizing. It remains to be seen what alternative location they will choose but somewhere near the Toronto Pearson International Airport might be under consideration.

Canadian airframer Bombardier enjoyed a decent March with regard to CSeries deliveries. Four units of the new series of planes were shipped to customers last month. After a sluggish start to the year this is a good trend but will it continue for them to be able to meet the 40 deliveries this year they set. Let's see how April turns out for them.

Bombardier today announced the following retirements and changes in responsibility for members of its Senior Leadership.

Effective immediately, Jim Vounassis is appointed Chief Operating Officer for Bombardier Transportation. Jim will report directly to Laurent Troger and join BT’s core leadership team. He will have responsibility for BT’s global operations, quality and procurement functions, as well as its overall industrial strategy. In this new position, Jim will focus on driving operational excellence and delighting customers with improved quality and delivery performance as we execute on our rail backlog of more than $35 billion. “Jim is well suited for this role given his long track record of performance, including most recently leading Bombardier’s Transformation and Procurement organizations, said Alain Bellemare, President and Chief Executive Officer, Bombardier Inc. “Jim’s proven leadership ability and operational expertise will help accelerate BT’s transformation efforts, securing its long-term competitive position in the fast growing global rail market.”

A new organizational structure for the transformation and procurement organizations supporting Bombardier’s aerospace units will be announced in the near future; until then Jim will maintain leadership responsibility.

“With the first half of our five-year turnaround plan successfully completed, Sylvain Lévesque has informed me of his desire to leave Bombardier and pursue the next chapter of his career, Bellemare explained. “I am extremely grateful for Sylvain’s many contributions to Bombardier over the past 20 years, especially his strong leadership on many key initiatives, insights and sound counsel since I joined Bombardier. We will all miss the great camaraderie, and the extreme professionalism Sylvain has brought to our company.”

Going forward, Louis Véronneau will assume responsibility for Bombardier’s strategic planning process in addition to his current role overseeing Bombardier’s partnerships, mergers, acquisitions and divestures as Bombardier’s Senior Vice President, Strategy and Corporate Development. “Louis is well qualified to assume this expanded role given his deep analytical skills, strong financial background and demonstrated leadership ability,” Bellemare continued. “Louis spearheaded the negotiations for many of Bombardier’s key strategic partnerships and divestitures, including the C Series partnership with Airbus and Investissement Québec, CDPQ’s investment in Bombardier Transportation and Bombardier’s sale of the Downsview property. With the company successfully de-risked, Louis will work closely with me and the rest of the leadership team to identify and execute strategic moves that support long-term sustainable growth across our portfolio.”

“Finally, Nico Buchholz has advised me of his wish to retire later this summer,” Bellemare explained. Nico was recruited to join Bombardier in 2015 as Group Chief Procurement Officer and to support several other key projects including the C Series ramp-up. During his tenure at Bombardier, Nico achieved significant cost savings by establishing a more efficient and focused procurement organization, and successfully lead numerous other strategic initiatives and restructurings across the businesses. “With the Airbus partnership effective on July 1, 2018 and his other projects drawing to a close, Nico has chosen to take on a new challenge. We are grateful for Nico’s many important contributions to Bombardier, including his vision and leadership in supporting Bombardier’s turnaround plan,” Bellemare stated.

Through a multi-million dollar contribution, Bombardier will focus on three main goals: supporting DAIR’s academic and research activities, supporting DAIR’s operations, and preserving the aerospace heritage of the site.

“This agreement is great news for Ontario’s aerospace industry and for the people of Toronto,” said François Caza, Vice President, Product Development and Chief Engineer, Aerospace, Bombardier Inc. “Since acquiring de Havilland in 1992, Bombardier has built strong relationships with local institutions to promote aerospace research and innovation.
