A Bombardier Global 5000 of the German Air Force Government Flight had a bad Crash Landing at Berlin Schönefeld this morning at around 0900 hours local time.

    Global5000 Flugbereitschaft.jpg
The aircraft was at Berlin Schoeneleld for inspection and repair with a civil company. As the aircraft was stationed at Cologne Airport, it was scheduled for the ferry flight back to Cologne with crew only. Shortly after takeoff, the crew decleared emergency and returned to Schoenfeld. Due to the severity of the emergency, the crew had major problems to control the aircraft and the intended precautionary landing turned into a crash landing.

The aircraft left the runway and sustained substantial damage on both wings, fuselage and undercarriage. The crew was taken to the hospital. The busy airport had to be closed for more than 6 hours.

I must say, the safety record and the dispatch reliability of our Government Flight is really not at its best at the moment. They need a complete set of new aircraft. At least 3 factory new Airbus ACJ 350 XWB are on order now. Some Airbus ACJ 319/320 are to follow.

I remember a little mishap at our Government VIP ramp at Cologne Airport many years ago, where I had fortuitously parked my little ugly Dornier Do-28 D2 next to our Air Force One, a Boeing 707. The aircraft was prepared and ready for departure for a presidential flight with our Head of State (Bundespräsident) Richard von Weizäcker and his entourage to Russia. The aircraft was roped off and guarded by civil guards. One Guard got bored and played with its gun. A shot went off and made a pretty big hole in one wing tank, causing a pretty bad fuel leak :p.

As the aircraft was unserviceable, the damaged aircraft and the standby aircraft had to change its quick change VIP interior (which took 2 hours). I happend to see our Head of State running around in the pilot lounge. I must say, he was not amused about the delay. Me, the young officer tried to make the lowest profile possible. The smallest grin could have caused my career to end just in this moment.

Sorry, got carried away again :D.

One more picture from public sources. I must say, smart phones are everwhere.

    smartphones are always present.jpg

I believe, the crew must have done a great job to survive that landing. Looks like the bird came down in a "F-100 Sabre Dance", because both wings hit the ground before the aircraft slid off the runway.

Hats off to the crew, well done indeed!

A Miami Air Boeing 737 overshot the runway and ended up in a river in Florida yesterday. The aircraft was under charter with 136 passengers and 7 crew onboard. It landed at Naval Air Station Jacksonville but overshot the runway ending up in the St John's River. All onboard survived the incident with a few passengers being transported to the hospital for minor injuries. No life-threatening injuries were reported.

A Sukhoi Superjet SSJ100 landed and was engulfed in flames at Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow today. Latest report suggest that at least 13 persons are dead. The aircraft was operated by Russian carrier Aeroflot and was carrying 73 passengers and 5 crew members. The aircraft left Sheremetyevo Airport bound for Murmansky as SU1492 and experienced issues and declared emergency and returned to the origin airport. Reports suggest that that the aircraft landed after two attempts.

An Aeroflot Superjet SSJ-100 caught fire today at Moscow Airport. The emergency did not went very well. Out of the 70 people on board many are injured and several are dead. Most probably an engine fire on this fairly new aircraft.

As part of those typical russian official announcements, the authorities had to correct the number of casualities from 3 to 13 and now to more than 40.

The chain of events as being released at the moment: Passenger (!!!) saw an engine fire after take off and informed the cabin crew. Cabin crew informed the cockpit crew. Captain decided to return to take off field (air abort with single engine, heavy weight landing). During what looks like a hard landing, a fuel tank ruptured and ignited a larger fire.

That makes room for a lot of question, I must say. Btw., this is not the first mishap with this fairly new type of aircraft.

    "From Russia with Love"

Unbelievable News from the Moscow accident:

It took several minutes for the airport fireguard to appear at the scene of the accident. According to ICAO rules, rescue and fire guard services have to be able to reach any point within the airport boundaries within 60 or 90 seconds after the alert. Thats the reason, why large western airports have more than one fire station. We normally expect the alert crews to be ready for action and waiting in the runway intersections, when the tower pushes the red button. But declearing emergency by the pilot did not seem to trigger any precautionary measures at Moscos biggest airport.

Second and most frightening, several people have definately died (due to the fire, only the regular front doors were available for ground egress) because some passengers in the forward seat rows insisted in taking there clothing and cabin luggage out of the overhead baggage compartements prior egress. This slowed down the evacuation conciderably and many victims in the rear of the cabin had no chance to survive. Videos show passengers walking away from the wreckage, carrying their cabin luggage and their jackets.

One more video shows the very bad (or poor?) crash landing. The pilot in command claims control problems due to a lightning strike which had him forced to make a manual (?) landing in a degraded control mode. No western commercial aircraft would be certified if a lightning strike could cause such control degradations.

IMHO, looking at this video, he was very fast on landing due to heavy weight and may be behind the aircraft due to stress, he pushed the bird towards ground, the nose wheel touched first and after a wild and big porpoise, the main gear collapsed at the final touch down and the breaking main gear ruptured a fuel tank. And then he lost control of the aircraft !!!!! Great show!

    SS-100 crash.jpg

The SS-100 is the first new passenger aircraft developed and built in Russia since the fall of the Sovjet Union and not really a success. The aircraft type is well known for its lets say marginal technical reliabilty record and its many incidents. This is its second (known) fatal accident. 170 aircraft have been built, of which 33 are flying outside Russia.

    I am speechless!!!!

Have a look at this and other youtube videos:

Unattended Passengers walking away from the burning aircraft with their cabin luggage and still no fire fighters at the scene of the accident. Do I love this country?

Aside from the Aeroflot crash landing in Russia there was also another crash with a private jet this time. The casualty this time was a Bombardier Challenger 601 that crashed in Mexico while flying from Las Vegas. There were no survivors of the 13 that were onboard. Mexican media reported that the passengers had been to a boxing match between Mexican boxer Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and U.S. fighter Daniel Jacobs in Las Vegas on Saturday. Mexico‘s civil aviation authority said the aircraft departed Las Vegas shortly before 3 p.m. local time. Nearly two hours later, Monterrey lost track of the jet and was unable to make contact with pilots, it said in a statement.

The Miami Air Boeing 737-800 series aircraft that overran the runway at Naval Air Station Jacksonville and rested in the nearshore area of the St Johns River has been removed. The first A380s to be scrapped are being scrapped. There are two A380s being broken apart in Tarbes. According to images showing the two all-white ex. Singapore Airlines aircraft with several parts missing like rudders and engines. These aircraft were just 12 years old and already are being scrapped after they failed to find secondary owners.
