Boeing is working with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and has contacted 737 operators advising them to inspect the slat track assemblies on certain airplanes. One batch of slat tracks with specific lot numbers produced by a supplier was found to have a potential non-conformance. If operators find the parts in question, they are to replace them with new ones before returning the airplane to service. Slat tracks are used to guide the slats located on the leading edge of an airplane’s wings. Boeing has not been informed of any in-service issues related to this batch of slat tracks. A Japan Air Lines (JAL) Boeing 787 was preparing to land at San Diego after flying all the way from Narita, Tokyo as flight JL66 on June 5th. The flight crew had slat issues and could not land at the airport at the time. They diverted to Los Angeles and subsequently landed without incident even though landing at a higher speed than usual. It remained on the ground for almost six hours while work was carried out on it. The aircraft involved in the problem is registered JA839J.

The Boeing 737 MAX grounding has been an expensive proposition for Boeing and to the airlines who had to put down their aircraft following the worldwide grounding. American Airlines says they have pushed their MAX reintroduction all the way down to September and that just gives an indication that we may not see the MAX flying for a while still yet. Some airlines are confident while others are skeptical and so skeptical that they have laid off their MAX pilots (for now at least). American Airlines has a fleet of 24 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. They expected that they would have the MAX 8 back flying by mid-August.

If you are looking for a service via Avianca Argentina then you will not be able to find it as that subset of Avianca has suspended operations. Suspended is the important word here as the termination is for about 90 days from today, June 9th according to Argentina's Civil Aviation organization. "The request is based on the start of a process of restructuring the company with the re-engineering of the regular route plan and the company's business model," says ANAC. The 90-day extension may be extended for another 90 days upon elapse if necessary.

The engine life of the Airbus A220 may be reduced thanks to excessive corrosion found in them. The Pratt & Whitney PW1500G is the powerplant powering the A220 and after routine overhaul corrosion was found in the High-Pressure Compressor (HPC). The result is that the HPC front hubs are cracking before their prescribed lifetime limit. The FAA has put out a notice of proposed rulemaking and suggests new life limits on the engines. With over 70 A220s in service now the early delivered aircraft like those accepted by AirBaltic will be under heavy scrutiny.

There is a new contender in the widebody world of commercial jet aviation. The CR929 is expected to have three variants, the CR929-500, CR929-600 and CR929-700. The company that is putting together the CR929 will either power the new jet with the new GE Aviation GE9X or the Rolls Royce TRENT 7000. They are the two likely contenders out of 7 engine manufacturer finalist. The final design for the CR929 is expected to be frozen in 2022 and COMAC might be the one building the composite fuselage and the Russian side will make the wing sections. Final assembly is expected to be in Shanghai while the engineering will stay in Russia.

Mitsubishi rebrands MRJ to SpaceJet. Yes, we are not kidding, the program is now called SpaceJet. They are also planning to have a new 76-seat variant of the new SpaceJet. Essentially they pulled the plug on the MRJ70 and will now be calling a new variant the SpaceJet M100. It appears they will be casting away the MRJ title period as the former MRJ90 is now the SpaceJet M90. "As we prepare for entry-into-service for the SpaceJet M90, we are also announcing the SpaceJet M100 – the result of our research and development during the past few years and the answer to the regional market's current and future needs," said Mitsubishi Aircraft President Hisakazu Mizutani. More information will be available at the upcoming Paris Airshow 2019.

With certification scheduled for 2023, the new rebranded Mitsubishi region jet (MRJ) now called the SPACE JET has to undergo a number of modifications and changes in order to make it suitable for the American market. The M100 (former MRJ70) has to meet the 86,000-pound weight limit required by U.S. airline scope clauses. SPACEJET would like to option the 76-seat M100 to have three-class configuration. They have to first look to lighten the current airframe which would involve the use of composites and light alloys in construction. There is alot to work out and figure out for this company.

EVA Air has taken delivery of its first Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner. The delivery represents the first of 20 Boeing 787-10s for the airline. The interior is arranged in two classes with 342 seats. The airline also operates the 787-9 variant. The remainder -10 will be delivered to EVA Air between now and 2022. "The 787 Dreamliner has become the flagship of our fleet and we will leverage the airplane's unrivaled fuel efficiency, reliability and size to operate high-density markets in Asia," said Steve Lin, Chairman of EVA Air. "The 787-10 offers around 15 percent more cabin space and cargo capacity compared to our existing 787-9s and this added capability will allow us to explore new opportunities for future growth in the emerging markets within Asia Pacific.
