It looks as though the Air France-KLM group has decided to push back A350 deliveries. Three A350s that appeared to have been on track for delivery this year have been pushed back to 2021. As a result of Covid, quad-engine models in the group's fleet will likely be put down. The remaining A340s in Air France's fleet were let go just this week. A380s have been on the ground as well with the future for many of them uncertain.

Avianca, the national carrier of Colombia has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The airline is filing it with a New York court to hopefully give it some time to be able to reassess and reorganize its business which has obviously been put in a precarious position thanks to the covid-19 situation. Avianca Holdings says the filing request, with the Southern District of New York bankruptcy court, is "necessary" given the "unpredictable impact" of the coronavirus crisis on its operations.

Panamanian flag carrier Copa Airlines has been slapped with a $450,000 fine for 'flying passengers between the U.S and Venezuela' in 2019. The U.S Department of Transportation (DOT) said, "an investigation by DOT’s Office of Aviation Consumer Protection found that for nearly a month following the issuance of DOT’s 2019 order, Copa sold more than 5,000 tickets for air travel between the United States and Venezuela and transported more than 15,000 passengers on these itineraries." The order they are referring to was imposed in May 2019 barring commercial airlines from transporting passengers and cargo between the two countries (US and Venezuela).

It appears that Norwegian canceled 97 Boeing aircraft which happened to be Dreamliners and 737 MAX types. As a result of not being able to take delivery and utilize these orders to make revenue they are now claiming compensation from Boeing.

Another company has deferred the delivery of expected aircraft. This time it is Helvetic pushing back seven E190-E2 aircraft they had on order. The E2 is of course the latest iteration of the E190 from Embraer. The overall order from the airline is for 12, they already have one or two in service.

Nearly 400 aircraft cancellations have occurred for the year 2020 and believe it or not, 80 percent of that figure is for the 737 MAX which has been struggling to return to service after being grounded. 150 of those cancellations for the MAX came in March alone due to Covid-related pressure. GOL for example, cancelled 34 units of the type in March. Avalon -a lessor company, cancelled 75-. BOC Aviation dropped 30 orders.

Lebanon-based Middle East Airlines (MEA) has received its first A321neo aircraft from Airbus’ final assembly line in Hamburg, Germany. The delivery is the first of nine aircraft to be delivered in the coming months. The highly-fuel-efficient A321neo will help reduce MEA’s operating costs. The airline’s A321neo is powered by Pratt & Whitney’s PurePower PW1100G-JM geared turbofan engines and is configured in a comfortable two-class layout with 28 seats in Business and 132 seats in Economy Class and the latest generation in-flight entertainment system and high-speed connectivity.

Boeing could be facing more problems regarding its new in-development Boeing 777X. While Boeing has not commented on the issue several sources are suggesting that the airframer will delay the 777X further citing a lack of demand for large jets as passenger demand also is not expected to be there. 2019 levels of passenger traffic is just not expected before 2023 at the earliest. We will have to wait on Boeing to make an announcement on this perhaps they may comment on it at the next earnings call next week. Should this delay happen it would not be good for Boeing because it would mean drawing out the certification process and reduce order confidence. To date Boeing earned 309 orders for the 777X which has two variants, the 777-9 and the 777-8, the larger is earmarked to hit the market first. Earlier timelines called for the 777-9 to enter service in 2021 but that will not happen. Despite this Boeing is continuing its flight tests with the aircraft available in the test program so far.

As we suggested, Boeing did announce a delay to the 777X entry into service. This will actually now happen in 2022. Calls are being made for Boeing 747 production to end by 2022 as well. 787 and 777 production rate will take a hit as well. For the 787, it will go from the present 10 per month to 6 per month. The 777ER/777X combnied will fall from 5 to 2 per month next year it appears. Boeing is also evaluating the possibility of consolidation of 787 plants into one.

The Comac ARJ21 has completed its flight testing at the world's highest civilian airport located in Sichuan Province. The ARJ21 has returned to Shanghai now after conducting tests at the Daocheng Yading Airport for half-month. The airport's altitude is around 4,411-meters or approximately 14,556-feet. In June, three ARJ21 regional passenger planes were delivered to major domestic airlines in Shanghai, marking the homegrown jetliner's entrance into the domestic, mainstream civil aviation market. The tests were done to prove the ARJ21's maximum take-off and landing altitude capabilities and verified the aircraft's reliability and performance in plateau conditions, COMAC said.

Airbus has adjusted the production rate of the Airbus A350 from 6 per month to 5 per month. This naturally is to align production to weak air transport demand brought on by the Corona virus pandemic.

Lessor giant AerCap has cancelled orders for a number Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. 15 737 MAX jets were cancelled by the aircraft lessor helping to worsen Boeing's problem with the still-grounded type. Lessor companies are not happy and AerCap is only one of many who have given the boot to some of the MAXes they previously ordered. Earlier in the year lessors like Avalon cancelled 75 while BOC Aviation dropped 30 orders.

An ex. Boeing pilot who is at the center of the 737 MAX probe has now left Southwest Airlines where he worked as a pilot after leaving Boeing. Mark Forkner has taken voluntary payout from Southwest Airlines as the airline looks to lessen the amount of persons on its payroll going forward in the immediate future to stem bleeding. Forkner who once was a Boeing Chief Technical pilot oversaw the regulatory approvals for pilot manuals and training on the MAX aircraft.
