I mean come on, i'm not beating down the idea of a new device BUT what about practicality and workability. The plans are calling it to be mounted on some part of the engine and a way that it doesn't affect aerodynamic characteristics of the aircraft. How in the world is a bird going to hear some whistle above the monstrous noise of a jet engine? By the time it hears it, it's already being spewn out the back of the jet exhaust.

2013 should be an interesting year for airlines...with acquisitions/mergers, bankruptcies helping to change the way some airlines will continue to operate.

We can expect that airlines like Air Canada, West Jet and Hawaiian to expand on their international routes somewhat while consolidation will definitely be finalized and take effect with many of the American operators such as AA, Delta, SouthWest etc to consolidate.

    ***

The Asia-Pacific region will see key airlines making strategic and in some cases necessary moves in 2013. Singapore Airlines will likely expand into China this year bringing stiff competition. Air Asia will try to further expand in Asia. In China, Tianjin Airlines is expected to continue to grow with low-cost carrier Spring Airlines almost threatening the major Chinese airlines.

    ***

In the Middle East the new Doha International Airport is expected to open in 2013, that would allow Qatar Airways to position itself for better connections of its flights. Etihad Airways will be playing its chess pieces even more with Aer Lingus, Virgin Australia, Air Berlin and Air Seychelles virtually under its wings.

    ***

In Europe you would remember that German Carrier Lufthansa pretty much is giving up trying to compete on the short haul fights with competing lower-cost carries so it is handing over those routes to is subsidiary company German Wings. Iberia meanwhile will keep causing headaches for IAG while in France, Air France contends with decisions over strategic business moves.

Qatar Airways has filed a $600 million legal claim against the firm constructing the New Doha International Airport. By all rights Qatar Airways should have been able to move into the new airport but the completion of the facility is grossly over due.

The new airport was due to be opened in December and now the head of Qatar Airways, Akbar Al Baker doesn't believe he can move into the new airport any time before Q2 2013.

"We have been badly affected as an airline with the delay impacting Qatar Airways' expansion plans that include new aircraft deliveries and opening up new routes at the rate we want to and more importantly causing a lot of inconvenience to our passengers in addition to the revenue losses to the airline and its subsidiaries," says Al Baker.

Boeing crosses 1,000-order mark with 737 Max

Things could not look any better for Boeing. Boeing's order book for the new 737 MAX programme has crossed the 1,000 mark. Aviation Capital Group (ACG) finalized an order in late December for 60 re-engined single-aisles. This has been something of a record for Boeing...

At current list prices for 50 737 Max 8s and 10 737 Max 9s, the near 6-billion dollar deal raises Boeing's total order book for the 737 Max to 1,029 aircraft just after 15 months of launching the new programme.

While in the Jet Aviation Casualty thread we said that incidents for business jets were on the rise in 2012, the trend has gone the other way for commercial aviation. There were approximately 21 fatal airline accidents in 2012. Those resulted in 425 deaths. Compare this with 2011 figures that were 32 accidents with 514 deaths. Should we feel safer flying on commercial airliners? I'll leave that for you to ponder on.

The next generation of E-Jets from Embraer will be revamped over the first generation. Apparently Embraer is switching engine manufacturers for the new generation E-Jets. The next version of the E-170 and E-190 family will be powered by the PW1700G and PW1900G geared turbofans, respectively, replacing General Electric CF34s on first-generation E-Jets, says Paolo Cesar Silva, president of Embraer commercial aviation.

The wings on the new generation aircraft will also be new to deal with the new engines. In further developments, the new jets will have stepped-up fly-by-wire upgrades also. These aircraft won't come on stream until 2018 or so.

Delta Launch "Glass Bottom" iPad App

Basically it's an App that allows passengers to track and have flight-specific information directly on their hand-held device. Current altitude, position, and flight speed along with their estimated time of arrival are among the many bits of information available.

Airbus says it is keeping its options opened for implementation of 'sharklets' on their A330 models. However, the airframer says they are not intent on re-engining the type. Chief operating officer for customers John Leahy says he will "keep pushing our engineers" to look at adapting the sharklets - developed for the A320 - to the larger twinjet.

American Airlines is changing its livery on its aircraft in a sort-of rebranding effort. No more will the Double AA exist. In fact one of their 737-800s already sports the brand new livery and two Boeing 777-300ERs will be painted before the maiden flight (under the new livery) from Dulles to Sao Paulo (Brazil) on the 31st of January 2013.

AirAsia head continues to push Airbus for A330Neo

AirAsia head, Tony Fernandes is continuing to pressure airframer Airbus to produce an A330Neo, essentially a re-engined A330 aircraft. Quite recently Airbus hinted at the fact that they were having thoughts about adding sharklets to A330 models but as for re-engining the model, no. However, Fernandes, from AirAsia believes that re-engining the A330 is a better option than using the brand new A350-8 XWB which is slated to replace the A330-200LR.

Thought your job was safe at Flybe?

Think again! Flybe, a UK regional carrier is looking to axe some 300 staff in a bid to become more profitable in a year's time, 2013 to 2014. Clearly the company is taking drastic action while backed by what they term as a clear plan, to get the company back into the black. The management count will be reduced by 20-percent and the production head-count by 10-percent.
