First Flight For CJ3 Gen 3 The first flight for the Gen3 iteration of Textron Aviation's Citation CJ3 has taken to the skies according to a news release from the airframer dated July 29th. The first flight advances the latest iteration towards its certification by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The next generation Light Jet category aircraft has a number of upgrades over the previous generation including the now obligatory Garmin Autoland feature.
With this milestone, all three next-generation Citation light jets — the CJ4 Gen3, CJ3 Gen3 and M2 Gen3 — have entered flight testing, demonstrating continued momentum across the Cessna next-generation light jet portfolio. “This achievement continues the forward momentum of the CJ3 Gen3 program and reflects the discipline, innovation and commitment of this team,” said Chris Hearne, senior vice president, Engineering & Programs. “Comprehensive flight testing will now begin for this aircraft with rigorous validation of its performance as we continue to work toward FAA certification and entry into service.”
Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport in Wichita was the scene for the first flight of the CJ3 Gen 3 that endured nearly 2 hours. The first flight reaching an altitude of 41,000 ft at a speed of 278-knots. The airframer suggests that customer feedback has been the backbone for many of the new features and upgrades that the CJ3 Gen 3 will have.
