A5 Light Sport Aircraft To Resume Production
Amphibious Light Sport Aircraft producer ICON Aircraft is expected to resume production of their A5 aircraft. The company has had an interesting time while it has been in existence being marked by sales successes but also issues with financial difficulties, a stint with chapter 11 proceedings, accidents with the A5 aircraft and market issues. Since then, the company was acquired by SG Investment America. Now there is news that the company is expected to return to production in 2027.

However, when they return to production they will be accompanied by ICON Sense. ICON Sense is a new safety system that has been developed by Avilution and Skytron Avionics specifically for the ICON A5. You may remember any of the ICON A5 accidents over the years caused by different situations but some relating to landing-gear configuration errors. The company made this announcement at the 2026 EAA Air Venture.

With the new technology it would go a long way to reducing unintended accidents. ICON described the technology as a significant step toward improving safety for amphibious flight. Although the airframer is looking to restart production, they have not cited delivery timelines or expected production rates for the anticipated 2027 restart.

Given the ICON A5's amphibious nature being able to takeoff and land on conventional runway as well as take off and land from the water it has led to a few customers being yacht owners. There are a few cases were the ICON A5 is a 'tender' onboard a yacht. Customers tend to like the craft's versatility but given that there have been some incidents and crashes the spotlight has been on the aircraft in a negative way.
