Cessna Aircraft Company, a subsidiary of Textron Aviation Inc., a Textron Inc. (NYSE:TXT) company, today announced an order from the U.S. Civil Air Patrol (CAP) for 21 new Cessna Skyhawk 172 aircraft, the latest in a relationship spanning 40 years. CAP, a federally chartered non-profit organization and designated by Congress in 1948 as the Air Force auxiliary, performs services for the federal government and for states and local communities such as search-and-rescue and disaster relief. “Few things are as fulfilling to all of us than our continued support of the CAP, our largest customer for single-engine piston aircraft,” said Joe Hepburn, senior vice president, Piston Aircraft. “The men and women of the CAP are involved in search-and-rescue operations, disaster relief, flight training, youth development and in promoting aviation throughout the country. We are proud to provide them aircraft in support of their mission.”

The Skyhawks, produced at the company’s facility in Independence, Kansas will be delivered throughout the first half of 2015, replacing older models in CAP’s fleet. In addition to the standard equipment on the aircraft, including the Garmin G1000 avionics suite, the new CAP Skyhawks will be equipped for glider towing.

Cessna-AVIC, Cessna’s joint venture operation in Shijiazhuang, China, has gained initial approval for Cessna Caravan Model 208 series maintenance by the country's Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). With this approval in hand, the Chinese joint venture company now has the green-light to perform all maintenance procedures required by Cessna up to 100 flight hours. Jackie Chen, general manager of Cessna-AVIC (Shijiazhuang), said: “Providing company-direct maintenance is an important step for our joint venture to eventually provide complete life-cycle support for the growing fleet of Cessna Caravan aircraft in China. Having the maintenance facility located with our Grand Caravan EX production facility provides the most efficient setup for customers in the region.”

Here is Yingling Aviation located in Witchita, KS. They specialize in remanufacturing Cessna 172s. The program is apparently off to a good start and even though they have not received any 'orders' per se, they love the drive and the interest in what they are doing. So what's the catch for them to remanufacture your old Cessna 172? They actually say they would prefer if it had less than 8,000 hours on it and a complete orderly log book. Other than that, they have no problems with repaint work or restoration of the interior. “We haven’t signed any orders yet, but there is a lot of excitement and interest in the programme, and people are asking us whether we can rebuild aircraft to spec,” says Pickett. Yingling Aviation is offering the remanufactured Cessna 172 from $159,000. Check them out at the link below

Cessna is getting ready to handover the 2,500th Caravan this quarter, to an Alaskan charter operator Bering Air which -funny enough- was the original launch customer for the single-engined turboprop . The Cessna Caravan EX came off the production line in Kansas approximately 30 years after the first iteration of the high-wing utility aircraft entered service with Bering Air.

The first customer installation of Tamarack Aerospace’s Atlas active winglet system was recently completed last week on a Cessna Citation CJ1. The aircraft which is in operation for private charter firm JetPingu was the candidate. The said aircraft is based at Switzerland’s Grenchen Airport. The installation took 400 man hours and was performed at the Textron Aviation Service Center in Zurich. The new winglets should allow the pilots to note less fuel burn because of the reduced drag. A testbed aircraft suggests as much as 25% reduced fuel burn can be obtained.
