Today, Airbus formally announced the ending of production for the largest passenger aircraft in the world, the Airbus A380. With rumours flying around in the last year and with key airlines cutting A380 orders, the program just is not viable anymore. Production will continue through to 2021 and there after no more will be made. It is also costing Airbus 463 million Euros to end the program. With A380 production at almost a standstill (expected to only deliver 8 of the type this year) and Emirates (their largest A380 customer) backing away from current and future orders the nails were further driven into the A380 coffin.

Icelandair has taken delivery of their first Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft . The jet isn't an outright purchase from Boeing but it is a lease from lessor BOC Aviation. Icelandair already operates a couple of the slightly shorter MAX 8 variants from Boeing. The new planes are part of the airlines re-fleeting program a well as its expansion into new markets.

The IAG Group has ordered the Boeing 777X for its brand British Airways. They have ordered up to 42 (18 firm and 24 options) of the new long-range aircraft to replace the Boeing 747s in their fleet which they expect to retire by perhaps 2023. “The new 777-9 is the world’s most fuel-efficient long-haul aircraft and will bring many benefits to British Airways’ fleet. It’s the ideal replacement for the 747 and its size and range will be an excellent fit for the airline’s existing network,” said Willie Walsh, IAG chief executive.

Boeing [NYSE:BA] delivered the first 737 MAX 8 to Comair Limited, which becomes the first airline in sub-Sahara Africa to operate the fuel-efficient jet. The airplane is the first of eight 737 MAX airplanes on order for Comair as the airline looks to refresh its fleet and offer better service for its passengers.

“The arrival of the MAX 8 aircraft is a continuation of our fleet renewal programme and builds on the most modern and efficient fleet in South Africa,” said Wrenelle Stander, Executive Director, Comair’s Airline Division. “It is the first of these aircraft to operate in Southern Africa. These newer aircraft, which showcase state-of-the-art technology, will improve our customer experience, enable us to hedge against fuel price volatility and enhance our operating efficiency.”

The new airplane enters a growing African aviation market, where the domiciled fleet has almost doubled in the past two decades. And over the next two decades, Africa will require nearly 1,200 new jets, according to Boeing’s Commercial Market Outlook. Boeing airplanes represent nearly 70 percent of the continent’s in-service fleet. Comair flies an all-Boeing fleet that includes 18 Next-Generation and seven Classic 737s for its kulula.com and British Airways (operated by Comair) brands. The 737 MAX 8 will allow Comair to achieve 14 percent better fuel efficiency and lower emissions, while flying 600 nautical miles farther than its predecessor.

Icelandic Ultra-Low Cost carrier WOW Air has ceased operations from today. The airline was in financial difficulty for some time now and was trying to source new investors and funding and were confident this would have happened but this morning the airline grounded its remaining fleet and ceased operations leading to stranded passengers in Europe and North America. "We have run out of time and have unfortunately not been able to secure the funding of the company," Wow Air founder and CEO Skúli Mogensen said. He went on to say that he would never forgive himself for not taking action sooner.

Virgin Atlantic has unveiled its new seating for the Airbus A350-1000 model that will join their fleet soon. It appears that they have used more than one manufacturer for the seats onboard representing the different classes. For example, Recaro has made the seats for Economy while Collins Aerospace made those for Premium Economy. Safran meanwhile is manufacturing the Business Class seats. The first Airbus A350-1000 is expected to start revenue service for Virgin Atlantic end of Summer 2019. Her name is "Red Velvet".

Boeing is taking a hit when it comes to its Boeing 737 MAX line. Airlines appear to have totally stopped ordering the jets now in the wake of the two high-profile crashes (Indonesia's Lion Air and Ethiopia's Ethiopian Airlines). Only 10 aircraft of the type were ordered for the first two months of 2019 and none were ordered in March and naturally you can probably expect none to be ordered in April. To contrast this, 112 orders came in in just the first quarter of 2018 alone.
