Perhaps, but they certainly had no trouble padding their own bank accounts year after year after year, with no regard to what was being taken out of the company.

    Or so I've heard...

Brazilian carrier GOL is feeling the effects from not being able to utilize its seven Boeing 737 MAXes. The last quarter of 2019 saw income reduced over the same period in 2018. While the airline is still Brazil’s largest in terms of market share, it has been unable to benefit from the more efficient new-generation Max aircraft in its network. With the uncertainty surrounding when the MAX model will be able to take to the skies once again, GOL can only continue to hold on and be innovative with its offering until it can get back its more fuel-efficient 737 MAXs.

Swiss first Airbus A320neo is now in their possession and it is powered by a pair of Pratt & Whitney GTF powerplants. “Thanks to their innovative GTF engines, the Airbus A320neo family aircraft will make a major contribution to SWISS’ environmental efficiency while providing our passengers a quieter trip,” said Thomas Klühr, CEO of SWISS.

A notice has been sent out from United to its cabin crew to desist from centrally locking control of the 787 DreamLiner's Electronically Dimmable Windows. This is one of the major cabin features of the DreamLiner and United wants its passengers to be able to control the amount of light that they want to enter their part of the cabin. United is reported to have said, "Remember, on B787s, please don't use the flight attendant panel to force window shades to darken or lock them at a set level. This prevents customers from adjusting their window shades as they prefer."

Flybe has gone in to administration and is the latest airline to have its wings clipped. Last year was brutal to airlines of the industry but 2020 so have is showing to be just as cruel with a couple airlines already going out of business for the new year so far. There are also a couple of airlines that are barely hanging on like South African for example. Virgin Atlantic, which is a shareholder in Flybe said that the negative impact of the Corona Virus (Covid-19) dealt the airline a heavy blow. However, Flybe has experienced financial woes before Covid-19.

Kuwait Airways is possibly going to get their first Airbus A330-800neo sometime during the third quarter of this year. The aircraft is expected to be configured with 226 seats of which 23 will be business class grade. In late 2018, the airline ordered 8 of the type. The first aircraft will be powered by two Rolls Royce (RR) TRENT 7000 powerplants.

The first commercial flight has been made by the first Aeroflot Airbus A350-900. It was a shorthaul domestic route and perhaps could have been expected with the aircraft departing Pulkovo Airport to Sheremetyevo Airport. VQ-BFY is expected to then start longhaul flights after this inaugural. The first aircraft was delivered to the Russian airline only on February 28th.

It is no secret that the Corona Virus is heavily impacting the aviation industry. Here is a look at some of the airlines that are badly affected. As you would imagine Chinese-based and Asian-based airlines would be really feeling it. China Southern, China Eastern, Cathay Pacific, Singapore, Hainan Airlines, JAL, ANA, Asiana, Korean Air. On the western side of the globe many airlines are also reducing capacity significantly to match the sharp fall-off in travel, United has reduced its domestic flights as well as international flights to help them keep money. As this pandemic prolongs, the cases will only deepen.

Aircraft lessor Avalon has cancelled its large order for Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. Back in 2017 at the Paris Air Show, the lessor made an order for 75 MAX aircraft with options for 20 more. It looks like they will still take some MAX orders but no where near the number they originally ordered. "We have come to a mutual agreement to restructure Avalon’s Max order book," says Boeing. Boeing continued to say that Avalon’s remaining commitment includes 55 unfilled orders for the MAX.

It appears that Boeing has restarted test flights of the new 777X aircraft. The airframer stopped flights following a pause in its operations due to the Coronavirus.

The joint venture (JV) between Boeing and Embraer is no more. Boeing has terminated its end of the deal leaving Brazilian manufacturer Embraer with alot of questions. In fact Embraer is now seeking damages. The US manufacturer (Beoing) suggested that it exercised its right to terminate in the Master Transaction Agreement (MTA) after Embraer did not satisfy all the necessary conditions for the JV. After Airbus stepped in and took on Bombardier's CSeries program (then renamed it the A220), Boeing wanted to give Airbus competition to the A220 by getting a hold of Embraer which produces regional aircraft as well like the EJets (175, 190, 195 etc).

"Embraer believes strongly that Boeing has wrongfully terminated the MTA, that it has manufactured false claims as a pretext to seek to avoid its commitments to close the transaction and pay Embraer the $4.2 billion purchase price," says the company in a statement. "We believe Boeing has engaged in a systematic pattern of delay and repeated violations of the MTA, because of its unwillingness to complete the transaction in light of its own financial condition and 737 MAX and other business and reputational problems."

Virgin Atlantic always had the plan to let go of their Boeing 747 fleet of aircraft but in a phased manner over time. However, the few that are left in the fleet are going away now thanks to the effects on the industry by Corona virus. Also, as a result of the crisis and to stem the financial bleeding, they are cutting over 3,000 jobs. The company previously put down the remaining A340-600s. They will soon operate an all twin-engine fleet, 787s, A350s and A330-900 neos.

Qantas Airlines has put the brakes on its Project Sunrise endeavours for now. "We do think there is a huge potential for Project Sunrise but the time is not right now given the impact that Covid-19 has had on world travel," said chief executive Alan Joyce. For those who may be asking what Project Sunrise is. Project Sunrise is Qantas' initiative to open nonstop services to the Australian east coast from New York and London from around 2022-23.
