  1. GE Delivers Two F414 Engines For NASA X-59 QueSST
NASA has taken delivery of two F414 jet engines from General Electric (GE). These will power the NASA X-59 QueSST that is currently under development by NASA and to be flight tested by Lockheed Martin. The X-59 QueSST is single engined and because it is a text program at this stage, they purchased two powerplants, one as the primary test engine and the other as a backup. Although NASA still is holding option to purchase a third in case they need it at some point.
  2. The X-59 QueSST is being developed to explore and test 'Low Boom' supersonic technology, hence the aircraft is known as a Low-Boom Flight Demonstrator. "Putting the X-59’s engine through its paces at a GE test cell in Lynn showed it could handle the high afterburner usage and demonstrated all other design upgrades, such as the newly designed control software, would work as expected," says NASA. The aim is to make the sonic-boom as quiet as "distant thunder" or as your neighbours "shutting a car door". Lockheed Martin has the X-59 to make its first flight in 2021. If all goes according to plan, the aircraft should be delivered to NASA in 2022.
