Airbus close to landmark jet order with Japan Airlines

(Reuters) - Airbus appeared close on Monday to breaking into one of rival Boeing's strategic markets with a multi-billion-dollar deal to sell jets to Japan, two sources familiar with the matter said. The deal is expected to involve the sale of A350 aircraft to Japan Airlines Co Ltd (9201.T) and follows an intense battle between the planemakers as Japan's two top carriers seek dozens of new long-haul jets over the next decade, the sources said.

They gave no details on the number of planes expected to be sold. In France, Airbus said it would hold a telephone briefing at 0430 GMT on Monday, but declined to give further details. There was no immediate indication whether the briefing concerned an aircraft order. A spokesman for EADS (EAD.PA) subsidiary Airbus declined further comment. In Tokyo, JAL was not immediately available for comment. "It looks as though JAL has decided to go with Airbus," one of the sources said, declining to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter.

Industry sources said in August that U.S. planemaker Boeing (BA.N) had edged ahead in a see-saw contest with its European rival as it defends a market share of around 80 percent in Japan, where it has strong ties to suppliers. But both sides have been seen as striving to win coveted endorsements for their latest long-distance jets from JAL and its domestic rival All Nippon Airways (9202.T). Industry sources have said both airlines are looking for around 25 aircraft. A deal for that number of A350s would be worth some $7-8 billion at list prices, depending on the type.

Boeing is looking for Japanese support for a proposed revamp of its best-selling 777 long-haul jet, while Airbus is pushing a larger version of its upcoming A350 aircraft. Airbus sales chief John Leahy told Reuters last month he had "not given up" efforts to land new aircraft orders in Japan, where Boeing has long been the dominant supplier and flag carrier JAL has yet to order Airbus aircraft. ANA (9202.T) said last month it would consider the risk of delivery delays when choosing between the A350, whose base model enters service in 2014, and Boeing's yet-to-be-launched "777X".

Airbus's second A350-900 test aircraft departed Toulouse on its first sortie. This confirms the deepening of the A350-900 certification programme four months after the maiden flight of the type. The aircraft, MSN3, took off at about 09:50 local time -at the time- and flew in a north-west direction towards the Bay of Biscay.

Airbus has kept its 2013 goals for the A380 despite a shortage of orders, but struck a more cautious note for future years, according to a newspaper interview. Chief executive Fabrice Bregier told French newspaper Les Echos that Airbus would both sell and deliver 25 of the world's largest passenger jets in 2013, meeting its targets. "We will deliver 25 this year. I have no intention of dropping below this rate in the years to come. The question is whether we will be able to increase sustainably to 30 aircraft.

"The target of reaching break-even on the programme in 2015 is based on that rate (30). At 25 a year, this target would be harder to reach, but on a scale that would still be marginal." Airbus parent EADS said in May that it aimed to bring the loss-making plane to break-even point in 2015 based on an average delivery rate of 30 aircraft a year.

An Airbus spokesman said A380 targets had not changed.

Deliveries have been held in check this year as Airbus installs a permanent fix to the recent problem of wing component cracks on the jet, which entered service in 2007. But analysts say it must on average deliver 30 a year to reach its break-even goal in 2015, or else cut costs further and push the break-even threshold below 30.

Industry sources told Reuters news agency last week that Airbus planned to carry out a review of its flagship jet due to slow sales and had not ruled out shaving A380 output to avoid gaps in 2015 when a handful of the jets remain unsold. They also said the review would examine other possible long-term options including making the 525-seat jet even bigger to reduce unit costs amid competition from large twinjets. Parts for the A380 such as strong metal forgings have to be ordered up to two years ahead, meaning time is running out for a decision on output in 2015, which is the critical period for EADS financial targets concerning the aircraft.

    FINE-TUNING

A union source said the upstream production rate of 2.8 per month - or 30 planes annually based on an 11-month industrial calendar - had already slipped slightly in the past two weeks. "We fine-tune our production on a monthly basis; we have done so successfully in the past and will do so in the future," an Airbus spokesman said when asked about the union comment.

Executive vice president Tom Williams told Reuters last week that small variations in production would "not be a crisis" and ruled out allowing factories to produce A380s that were unsold. In a bid to boost A380 sales, Airbus has formed a marketing partnership with Doric Lease which has placed a provisional order for 20 superjumbos. Industry sources say the race is on to finalise the order, possibly at next month's Dubai Airshow. However, the venture only takes effect in 2016.

In the newspaper interview, Bregier also confirmed that Airbus may opt to stretch the A380 some time next decade, but said the current version suited the majority of airlines. "Personally, I think the A380 programme will have a stretched version, maybe in 10 or 15 years from now," he said. Bregier reaffirmed the main EADS financial target of reaching a 10 percent margin in 2015 excluding the new A350, which he said was going according to plan. He said Airbus would maintain production of A320s at 42 a month to ease pressure on the supply chain and ensure a smooth transition to a new version due to enter service in 2015.

Tigerair of Singapore unveiled the first A320 aircraft to be retrofitted in Asia with Sharklets. Five A320s have already been delivered to Tigerair with Sharklet-ready wings, with the retrofit work being undertaken by Sepang Aircraft Engineering in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Sharklets are made from light-weight composites and are 2.4 meters tall. They are an option on new-build A320 Family aircraft and standard on all members of the new A320neo family. They offer operators up to four percent fuel burn reduction on longer range sectors and provide the flexibility of either adding an additional 100 nautical miles range or increased payload capability of up to 450 kilograms. In addition to its retrofitted aircraft, Tigerair will start taking delivery of production-fitted Sharklet aircraft later this year.
