Airbus Military is looking to take orders from France and Singapore for A330 multi-role tanker. "We have a second wave of new tanker contracts, and a high probability to secure the majority of them in 2013," according to Rafael Tentor, head of programmes for light and medium aircraft and derivatives.

While Airbus Military is looking to secure more deliveries for their A330-based multi-role tanker, competitor Boeing is starting to build their multi-role tanker based on their 767 platform. Boeing will start building the first KC-46 tanker for the US Air Force in June 2013. The debut flight of the full KC-46 should occur in the first quarter of 2015, according to Jake Howitt, Boeing's deputy KC-46 programme manager.

Airbus Military (AM) readies winglet-equipped C295W for the international market. The future C295 will feature a strengthened wing to faciliate the installation of metallic winglets. The addition piles on less than 200 lbs to the aircraft's weight, the company says.

The United States Air Force (USAF) is saying that it will consolidate depot maintenance for their F-22 Raptors at the Ogden Air Logistics Complex at Hill AFB, Utah. At the moment, maintenance for the stealthy fifth-generation fighter is done between Ogden and a Lockheed plant in Palmdale, California.

Syria to perhaps buy more MiG-29s from Russia

Moscow is to perhaps sell at least 10 more RAC MiG-29 fighters to existing operator Syria, according to Russian sources. However, the time-frame for deliveries or whether they will be brand new or refurbished aircraft is unknown at the moment.

France confirms order for 34 NH90 troop transports

The French defence ministry has nodded in the affirmative that an order for 34 NH Industries NH90 troop transport helicopters has been made for the army. A deal had been expected earlier this year, but was delayed until the publication of the French government's defence review in April. You surely will hear more about this at the Paris Air Show.

Boeing's enhanced medium altitude reconnaissance and surveillance system (EMARSS), a heavily modified Beechcraft King Air 350ER, has conducted its first flight. The flight, from Beechcraft's facility in Wichita, Kansas, approximately lasted 4-hours and checked various systems, excluding the sophisticated sensor suite. Boeing is expected to build four aircraft as part of engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) testing. They will later be delivered to the US Army to partly fulfill its 12-strong order.

Interesting that the United States Air Force is going to buy a wholeheap of iPads for its services and now makes them officially on board or airborne with the iPad revolution. The contract worth some $9.36 million is for as many as 18,000 of the Apple tablets. Savings is what the USAF is after on printing and distributing charts and aircraft manuals, coupled with fuel savings, the Air Force Mobility Command estimates the iPads will save $5.7 million per year over the next decade, it is estimated.

F-35A launches its first AMRAAM missile

"The AIM-120 launch is one small, but critical increment towards proving combat capability," says F-35 weapons director Charlie Wagner. "We've spent years working on the design of the aircraft, and many months ensuring that weapons could be contained within the aircraft and dropped as designed."

Today during the Paris Air Show, Beechcraft Defense Company said that it expects the growth in international defense budgets to lead to demand for its trainer and light attack aircraft. Although most Western nations saw defense cuts in 2012, military spending rose by 7.8 percent in North Africa, 8.4 percent in the Middle East and 4.2 percent in Latin America.

Perfromed using a "Grizzly" development aircraft, the mass flare release was intended to prove the ability of the A400M's self-protection equipment to counter the threat posed by shoulder-launched surface-to-air missiles during tactical operations.
