News concerning the G650 flight-test aircraft is out after the NTSB investigation. In brief synopsis, the report lays the blame of the fatal accident on Gulfstream’s aggressive test flight schedule and failure to rectify pre-existing flaws in the ultra-long-range business jet’s takeoff speed.

The accident killed four veteran Gulfstream employees. The jet’s wing apparently struck the tarmac during a simulated engine-out takeoff – was technically the result of a stall and uncommanded roll during a simulated engine-out takeoff.

According to the NTSB, previous problems related to Gulfstream’s erroneously low takeoff speed – including uncommanded roll events – occurred prior to the deadly crash in Roswell, New Mexico, but were not appropriately investigated by the company. NTSB officials also said Gulfstream team members involved in the flight testing program lacked clear roles and responsibilities, and that the company failed to enact the oversight necessary to ensure effective risk control.

Gulfstream names sherman collins to field service representative post in san francisc

Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. recently named Sherman Collins to its staff of field service representatives (FSRs) in the United States. From his base in the San Francisco Bay Area, Collins provides technical and maintenance assistance to Gulfstream owners and operators in northern California.

Collins, who has been involved in the maintenance of Gulfstream aircraft for more than 22 years, reports to Mike Quaid, manager, Field Service Operations, Western United States. Most recently, Collins spent 12 years as the director of aircraft maintenance for an air transportation company located in Dallas. The company operated a Gulfstream G550 during Collins’ last six years on the job and a GV during his first six years.

From 1990 to 2000, Collins worked in various positions for Gulfstream in Savannah, Dallas and Long Beach, Calif. He started as a technician, working on GIVs and earlier Gulfstream models, and then spent two years in Gulfstream’s technical training department as an instructor, researcher and writer. Collins moved on to become a Technical Operations staff member specializing in mechanical systems, such as flight controls, landing gear and fuel systems, for the company’s large-cabin models in Savannah and Long Beach.

After spending a year with Gulfstream’s field service support and aircraft transition team, Collins became a Dallas-based FSR in 1996. Collins earned a Federal Aviation Administration airframe and powerplant license and is a certified FlightSafety International Master Technician for the G550. The former member of the U.S. Marine Corps holds an associate’s degree in aviation maintenance technology from Eastern New Mexico University.

Gulfstream is expected to deliver the first G650 to its client within the next few weeks. At quarter-end Gulfstream's backlog stood at just over $16 billion, including approximately five years of G650 production and around 18 months of G450 and G550 deliveries.

Gulfstream said to be close to developing a supersonic business jet. Just remember they are already close to it with the G650 with a top speed of 0.925 MACH. Gulfstream says it is "very close" to overcoming the noise and shockwave problems that have prevented development of a supersonic business jet that can operate over land.

The Rolls-Royce Tay engines powering the G450 are a viable option for supersonic speed as well as the set running the G650, the Rolls-Royce BR725.

Gulfstream names Steve Cass Vice President of Communications

Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. recently named Steve Cass vice president, Communications. Cass will oversee internal and external communications at Gulfstream, reporting to Scott Neal, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing. “In today’s 24-7 news cycle, it is imperative for Gulfstream to have an experienced, visionary leader at the helm of Communications,” said Neal. “Steve brings 25 years of military and business aviation experience to this role, including 15 years of representing Gulfstream to customers, dignitaries, media and industry.”

Prior to being named vice president of Communications, Cass worked at Gulfstream as director, Sales Support. In that position he was responsible for coordinating activities at the Savannah Sales and Design Center; the Sales Development and Sales Engineering groups, where he supported new aircraft sales worldwide; and the Technical Marketing group, where he assisted with new product development programs and product enhancements.

Since joining Gulfstream in 1992, Cass served in Preliminary Design Engineering, where he worked on the GV program, various aircraft design studies, special mission aircraft, sales support and world record analyses. In 1998, he became manager of Technical Marketing, overseeing a team to develop and present technical and competitive information for use in the marketing and selling of Gulfstream aircraft and supporting the sales team worldwide. Before coming to Gulfstream, Cass worked for five years at Rockwell International in aircraft conceptual design. He is a Leadership Savannah graduate and an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He graduated in 1987 from Cal Poly Pomona with a degree in aerospace engineering.
