In the crucial minutes before an Asiana Airlines flight crashed in San Francisco last summer, the pilots voiced concern about the plane's low speed but did nothing to correct it until just before it hit the ground. A hearing on Wednesday into the July 6 crash that killed three people and injured more than 180, highlighted the pilots' mistaken reliance on the autopilot to maintain their airspeed but also Korean cultural factors that may have played a role, and the design of the flight controls. The pilot flying the plane was "stressed" about hand-flying the plane, according to interviews with National Transportation Safety Board investigators, and hesitant about aborting the landing because he felt the more senior pilot observing him should make that decision. Asiana Airlines Flight 214 came in too slowly and too low, causing the plane's tail to hit a seawall short of the runway. The plane spun 330 degrees as it broke apart and caught fire, strewing wreckage along the runway.
Ethiopian Airlines is investigating the reasons why a Boeing 767-300 belonging to them landed at the small Tanzanian airport of Arusha. Flight ET815 had been due to arrive at Kilimanjaro, following a service from Addis Ababa, but was unable to land. Ethiopian says a 'crippled Cessna' on the runway forced the diversion. "Hence the aircraft landed at an alternate airport," the carrier states. However, it -the carrier- has yet to explain why the 767 diverted to such a small facility. Nairobi's international airport is about 250km north of Kilimanjaro.
A British Airways 747-400 aircraft suffered damage to its right wing as a result of a collision with a building at Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport. The aircraft, bearing registration G-BNLL, was operating flight BA34 on the Johannesburg-London Heathrow route, British Airways said in a statement. The incident occurred during the late evening on Sunday, 22 December, as the Rolls-Royce RB211-powered aircraft was taxiing.
