Some good news in the MRO sector with Embraer expanding its footprint in the North Eastern United States in terms of capable service centers. Long Island, New York-based Hawthorne has added the Phenom 100 and 300 as well as the Legacy 450 and 500 along with the Praetor 500/600 models to its MRO services. Previous to this the company was limited to the Legacy 600/650 MRO work. Jet East, at Trenton-Mercer Airport in Trenton, New Jersey, has also added the Legacy 450/500 and Praetor 500/600 models to its Embraer-authorized maintenance capabilities. That particular facility was previously maintaining the Embraer Phenom 100/300 light jets.

With new major development in Kuala Lumpur and Dubai and new line service bases in several additional European cities, Dassault Aviation is leveraging recently acquired MRO capabilities to reorganize and consolidate its worldwide support network and bring Falcon expertise around the world. The company can now offer major inspections at a range of new locations, dispatch GoTeams to more remote places, and share expertise across its global network. This ensures a single uniformly high level of factory service wherever Falcons fly. Dassault Aviation Chairman and CEO Eric Trappier discussed the company’s proactive product support strategy at NBAA. "In 2019, we acquired TAG Maintenance Services (TMS), ExecuJet MRO Services and RUAG’s MRO operations in Switzerland to build up our factory service capacity, and are now investing heavily in these premier service networks to foster sustained organic growth," said Trappier. "Two examples of this strategy are our new ExecuJet MRO facilities in Kuala Lumpur and Dubai, which replace smaller preexisting operations and are poised to become regional service hubs for our growing fleets in Asia and the Middle East. These strategic moves will elevate the quality and consistency of Falcon service around the globe."

    Making Falcon Support Truly Global

ExecuJet MRO locations in the Middle East, Asia and Australia have brought Falcon factory service to parts of the globe where Dassault previously had a relatively small footprint. And thanks to the addition of experienced Dassault MRO expertise, ExecuJet MRO is now able to offer major inspections at these facilities as well.

TAG Maintenance service now has its first electric GPU for servicing aircraft. ITW GSE’s new generation GSE 7400 eGPU was selected for TAG's ground power requirements. It is the first of its kind to go into operation at Geneva airport. "We put ITW’s eGPU through extensive trials and were extremely impressed by its efficiency and versatility," said Cyrille Pillet, VP Maintenance Operations at TMS. "The unit can perform several turnarounds before it needs recharging and its quietness and pollution-free operation make it popular among employees and operators alike." The commercial battery powered Ground Power Unit provides 400Hz/115V and is capable of supporting the full range of business aviation aircraft currently in service.

Embraer is looking to expand its footprint with its own owned service centers. Presently the airframer has 5 owned service centers but more than 60 authorized service centers. The five that they own are in Brazil, France and in the United States. Fort Lauderdale, Melbourne, FL and Mesa, Arizona are the three in the U.S. There is one in Sorocaba, Brazil and the other in Le Bourget, France. In the future the airframer will have more wholly-owned service centers besides the 5 they currently have.

    Drones and MRO work?

A few years ago back in 2018, airframer Airbus revealed a drone-based maintenance solution termed as Advanced Inspection Drone (AID). This was developed to help increase efficiencies related to MRO procedures. The conventional way of doing this is that a normal visual inspection of an airplane needs to be done and many times this can last an entire day to finish. Airbus’ use of a drone that obtains images in 30 minutes and analyzes and processes the collected data in just 2.5 hours. That alone shows the increased cost and time savings that can be associated with drone tech. The drone is kitted with a laser-based sensor that is capable of detecting obstacles and halting the inspection when necessary. Everything is autonomous too.

On the five-year anniversary of the opening of Dassault Falcon Service’s (DFS) service center in Mérignac, France, the airframer announced the operation will expand its capabilities there to include other Falcon models like the 900EX EASy, 2000EX EASy, and the wide-cabin forthcoming Falcon 6X, which is set to enter into service next year. The 7,500-sq-m (80,729-sq-ft), six-bay Mérignac service center was originally opened to support the large cabin, long-range 7X and 8X trijets. Since its opening, the service center has mostly been operating at maximum capacity and has completed 35 of 53 Falcon 7X C-checks. "It has helped [to take] some of the heavy maintenance load off DFS’s busy Paris Le Bourget facility. Besides, as the service facility most closely linked to our production and engineering teams, it is ideally suited to resolve complex maintenance issues", said Jean Kayanakis, senior v-p of worldwide Falcon customer service and service center network.

AMAC Aerospace has now taken over Gamit ltd. Bernd Schramm, Chief Operating Officer AMAC Aerospace Switzerland, said: "We are excited to incorporate Gamit Limited into the ‘AMAC Aerospace Group of Companies’ as it will give the group more aviation related services that we normally have to seek from the wider markets. We will be integrating a strong team based out of the UK with about 100yrs worth of cumulative experience." The business model of Gamit Ltd is based on three pillars: Material and logistics support, technical services and digital records online. The material support services is the core business: Since 1990, Gamit has been providing airlines, corporate and VIP aircraft part support with an international network of supply chain partners formed over the past 30 years. The customer needs shape the technical services support. Over the years, the services included onsite technical support for passenger to freight conversions, engine overhaul and aircraft base maintenance. Other services offered historically included CAMO and commercial end of lease services. ROAM comprises digital records online. The solution is a web-based application developed in-house and serving all those involved with aircraft records and airworthiness.

Gamit Ltd will keep its offices at London Stansted Airport.
