An airport in the UK is going ahead with more sustainable practices with the implementation of Hydrogen fuel for ramp vehicles. Teesside Airport is about to introducing hydrogen-powered ground support vehicles. With funding from the UK government, this push will help this member of the air transport industry become much more green in its operations and head in the direction of net zero status. Following earlier trials involving cars, tow tugs, vans, and forklift trucks, £8 million ($10 million) in funding is being provided to install a permanent hydrogen refueling facility at the airport by 2025.

Airbus has become a strategic partner with DG Fuels, LLC ('DGF'), an emerging leader in sustainable aviation fuel. "Sustainable aviation fuels play a crucial role in enabling aviation's decarbonization roadmap. We are committed to supporting all efforts that contribute to making them available at scale around the globe," said Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury. "The partnership with DG Fuels supports the emergence of a new technological pathway allowing for the production of SAFs from a broader range of waste and residue sources, first in the U.S with a potential for large-scale production worldwide." "The DGF team is excited to have finalized this SAF partnership with Airbus," commented Michael Darcy, Chairman and CEO at DG Fuels, "and we look forward to working together to accelerate the initial SAF facility in Louisiana and the subsequent scale up at various locations in the United States and beyond."

If you are going to Las Vegas by jet for the upcoming NBAA-BACE later this month you will be pleased to know that three Las Vegas airports will be providing SAF to customers. Henderson Airport (KHND) will have on tap 40,000 gal of SAF. Harry Reid International Airport (KLAS) will have 16,000 gal and North Las Vegas Airport (KVGT) will be providing for the first time an unspecified amount. “Providing SAF for aircraft departing from this year’s convention not only makes the event more sustainable, but allows NBAA members to take an active role in helping the industry to achieve our net-zero target,” said NBAA president and CEO Ed Bolen.

Farnborough will embark on the largest solar installation in the South East of England. Panels will be installed on the airport’s curved hangar roofs, terminal buildings, control tower, ground support facility building and on the roof of its Aviator Hampshire hotel, as well as allowing the airport’s electric vehicle fleet to be charged using self-generated electricity. CEO Simon Geere said: “In our efforts to be a sustainability showcase for airports around the world, we are always looking for new ways to supply and create sustainable energy sources; the new solar installation will enable us to reduce our controllable emissions as set out in our Net Zero Roadmap.” Installations will begin this year and be carried out by solar generation company Solivus, who provide lightweight solar solutions more suited for buildings like aircraft hangars that are unable to hold the weight of conventional solar panels.

Some more news relating to SAF in the industry. This one is coming from the Farnborough Airport which this week celebrated the landmark of selling its millionth liter of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The milestone has come approximately a little more than two years after it first made the fuel available to the flying public in June 2021. Farnborough gets its SAF through World Fuel Services.
"We want to be a genuine catalyst for change and are always looking for new ways to supply and create sustainable energy sources," commented Farnborough Airport CEO Simon Geere. They are endeavouring to be a SAF-only airport by the end of this decade.

Rotterdam airport signs big deal for long-term SAF. They are working with Shell and will formulate high-SAF blends for the airport. RTHA general manager Wilma van Dejk said: "Sustainable fuel is essential for the future of aviation. Thanks to this long-term commitment, Shell can invest in production facilities and the airlines can gradually adapt to the new reality."

EcoPulse is a distributed hybrid-propulsion demonstrator aircraft developed in partnership with Daher and Safran. It took its first flight on 29 November 2023. Airbus is contributing battery technology and aerodynamic modelling to this project, which aims to leverage the benefits of distributed propulsion to improve aircraft performance.

Boeing is committing to increasing its SAF use. In 2024, according to plans, Boeing is looking to increase its SAF use by 60% over last year. The company is looking to purchase some 9.4 million gallons of a 30 percent SAF blend to support its ecoDemonstrator program and U.S. commercial operational flights. 4 million gallons will be delivered to Boeing’s fuel farms in the Pacific Northwest, with 2.5 million gallons of the Neste-produced fuel supplied by Epic Fuels and 1.5 million distributed by Avfuel. The remainder will be satisfied through the book-and-claim process.

Bombardier announced recently that more than 3,000 solar panels have been installed on the roof of Bombardier’s London Biggin Hill Service Center located at the London Biggin Hill Airport, underscoring its commitment to promote sustainable practices within the aviation industry and to reduce its energy consumption at its worldwide facilities. The recently completed project was developed in collaboration with Zestec Renewable Energy, a funder, developer and asset manager of renewable solutions and part of the Octopus Energy group. The new PV solar panels will generate more than 1.133 million kWh, lowering the annual carbon emissions by up to 252 tons and providing up to 32% of the facility’s total energy demand from an on-site renewable source.

The Taiwanese carrier Eva Air says it is going to apply Aeroshark skin to its Boeing 777F aircraft. It will work with Aeroshark developers Lufthansa Technik (LHT) and chemical firm BASF for the application of the film, with the first aircraft expected to enter service in September. The film, measuring 50 micromillimeters thick, replicates shark skin, and reduces aerodynamic drag on the airframe, lowering fuel consumption and emissions by 1-2%. About 830sq m (8,930sq ft) of the film will be used to cover the fuselage and engine nacelles.

Electric fuel truck is now available at Modern Aviation is it accepted its first of the type recently. It is known to be one of 2 in operation in the world. The 5,000-gallon Rampmaster tanker is only the second fully electrified jet-A refueler in the world. Signature Aviation had the pleasure of being the first to acquire one earlier this year. First photo is of Modern Aviation's specimen and the second is Signature's own.

Although SAF has been available at many airports in 2024, IATA says it is disappointed in the slow adoption of the more environmentally friendly fuel. International Air Transport Association (IATA) suggests that the growth in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production did not meet previous estimates in 2024. By its calculations, to reach its goal of net-zero emissions by 2050, IATA sees a need for between 3,000 and 6,500 new renewable fuel plants globally, with an annual average capital expenditure of $128 billion.

From today, ACI Jet in California at the San Luis Obispo County Airport (KSBP) is expected to have continuous supplies of SAF for its customer aircraft. Produced by Neste and distributed by Avfuel, the SAF will be a 30% blend, with each 8,000-gallon tanker load providing a 19-tonne life cycle carbon emissions reduction, the equivalent annual emissions of 4.5 cars.

“As the aviation industry moves toward its sustainability goals, the availability and adoption of SAF will be critical,” said Andrew Robillard, ACI’s v-p of FBOs and facilities. “ACI Jet is thrilled to bring [SAF] to our San Luis Obispo FBO, offering our customers a meaningful way to reduce their environmental impact while continuing to enjoy the exceptional service we provide.”

This may be the first time that we have heard an F-35 flying on SAF. The Royal Norwegian Air Force has become the first operator to fly the Lockheed Martin F-35 stealth fighter using what Oslo describes as being a “significant proportion” of sustainable aviation fuel.

Finally Farnborough Airport has completed the big solar project that they were working on. The project saw more than 4,000 solar panels being installed on the curved roof structure. On a yearly basis the installation is expected to generate over 1.2 GWh. It also puts the airport firmly on its net zero aspirations by 2030.
